| "I've come here because my Clanmates have told me an utterly unbelievable story. They say that you are claiming that the false Bramblestar escaped his prison and dragged Squirrelflight into the Moonpool-while she was still alive. [..] I've been alive for many years, yet I've never heard of a cat disappearing into the Moonpool." |

Chapter description[]
- Rootspring, his senses alert, walks down a dark tunnel. Suddenly, he hears a yowl, and sees his friend Shadowsight in danger. The yellow tom starts running to Shadowsight, but it seems that Rootspring is not getting closer to his friend. Still running, a strange ravine opens up suddenly, causing Rootspring to fall.
- The SkyClan warrior opens his eyes, and spots his nest. Glaring at Rootspring, Macgyver asks the tom if he has to make such loud noises. Muttering his apologies, Rootspring goes over his dream, wondering if Shadowsight was hurt or even dead. He peers out of his den, and realizes that the sun was already out, and the warriors' den was close to empty. He hurries out of the warriors' den, and scans the camp. Realizing that no one seemed to notice him arising late, Rootspring turns to the entrance to hunt. Just as he is about to leave, Dewspring and Mintfur enter the SkyClan camp with Jayfeather, Lionblaze, Bristlefrost, and finally Graystripe.
- Rootspring immediately cheers up, knowing that the elder's absence had stung Bristlefrost. Leafstar and Graystripe greet each other, the former noting that it is good to see the latter at the lake again. Graystripe interrupts Leafstar, stating that when he returned, ThunderClan was awry, with Squirrelflight gone. The gray elder notes that Lionblaze has stepped down to let him become leader. Leafstar stutters, while Rootspring notes that Graystripe is quite old.
- Graystripe's gaze falls on Rootspring, whose paws shake after realizing that he was looking at the deputy to the great Firestar. The acting leader tells Rootspring that his Clanmates have told him that Bramblestar's impostor escaped his ShadowClan prison and kidnapped Squirrelflight, taking her into the Moonpool. Rootspring nods, so Graystripe asks Leafstar for permission for Rootspring to show him exactly where the scene between Squirrelflight and the false Bramblestar happened. Leafstar agrees, stating her respect for Squirrelflight, and Rootspring tells the ThunderClan cats that he is ready.
- Now looking over the Moonpool, Rootspring notices two cats who are already there, identifying them as Shadowsight and Mothwing. Looking closer, he realizes Shadowsight to be unconscious, while Graystripe asks what was happening. After rejecting the idea of Shadowsight taking deathberries again, Mothwing explains that she had helped Shadowsight dream his way into the Place of No Stars.
- Graystripe wonders aloud if Shadowsight realizes the horrors of the Dark Forest. Right after, Tigerstar and Dovewing, Shadowsight's mother and father, arrive. The ShadowClan leader wonders where Shadowsight is, stating that both him and Mothwing were missing that morning. Mothwing states that Shadowsight was under her guidance, informing him that he had dreamt his way into the Dark Forest. Tigerstar, outraged, demands why Mothwing let him, but Mothwing simply states that as a medicine cat, there can be times where they have to make their own decisions.
- Tigerstar lets out a grunt, and they both seem to then realize the other cats in the vicinity. The tom then asks why Graystripe and Leafstar are there, so the former returns the question, noting that from what he had been told, Shadowsight was being held prisoner in ShadowClan camp. The ShadowClan leader retorts that that is ShadowClan business, as Shadowsight is back on his medicine cat duties. Graystripe then asks why the other leaders weren't informed of Shadowsight's absence since he is a major role in the whole situation, but Tigerstar responds that Graystripe has never led a Clan, so he would not know about making a leader's decisions.
- The acting leader informs Tigerstar of his leadership. Tigerstar sarcastically asks how long he would last, before stating that he should step down and let the StarClan-chosen leaders to handle things. Graystripe demands for respect, recalling how he led ThunderClan in Firestar's absence before Tigerstar was even born. Leafstar intervenes in the toms' argument, stating that the other leaders should be informed. Graystripe agrees, touching on the fact that the Sisters are nearby and could be of help. Tree goes to fetch Harestar, while Lionblaze departs to fetch Mistystar.
- Rootspring talks to Bristlefrost about Shadowsight, stating that he would be very scared if he had been tasked with entering the Dark Forest alone. Bristlefrost notes that the black tom had always been brave, and the yellow SkyClan warrior just nods. Eventually, Rootspring falls asleep, letting his exhaustion take over. The same dark tunnel he had dreamed of the last night appears to him again, with the same outline of Shadowsight, who yowls for Rootspring to "beware". The tom asks himself is he is still dreaming, but then, Willowshine's spirit appears to him, telling him that only he can save Squirrelflight. Astonished, Rootspring tries to clarify, but Willowshine seems to be in a rush, as the now dead medicine cat grabs Rootspring by his scruff and pulls him into the Moonpool, against the yellow warrior's will.
