Chapter description[]
- Shadowsight wakes up in pain, back beside the Moonpool. Mothwing quickly tends to his injuries, telling him that he will be alright. The younger medicine cat shudders after sparing a glance towards his injured leg, now believing Icewing's prior warning about the Dark Forest. As Mothwing works around him, fetching poppy seeds, he tries standing but finds it difficult due to his leg. He also feels his ear covered in blood when he notices Tree and Bristlefrost sitting a couple tail-lengths away. Looking at the gray ThunderClan warrior, he asks if she had been there in the Dark Forest. Bristlefrost tells him that she had been as he asks if she saw Bramblestar escape. The news comes as a shock to her, as does her revalation of Rootspring's disappearance into the Moonpool to Shadowsight. She asks if he had seen the SkyClan tom, but the gray tabby states he didn't but that meant little due to the nature of the Dark Forest.
- Shadowsight asks how Bristlefrost managed to get there and she says she dreamed her way there. Mothwing returns as they discuss the place, voicing that it should remain as a dangerous place to travel to. As she tends to him, Shadowsight recounts what had happened there, from fighting Ashfur and managing to create a distraction allowing Squirrelflight and Bramblestar's escape. He comes to the conclusion that he wants to go back. At this Mothwing forbids him, pointing out his injuries. Tree agrees with her but points out the lengths he had already gone to. Bristlefrost, however, sides with Shadowsight's argument as they still need to help the ThunderClan leader and deputy escape from Ashfur completely. The gray medicine cat agrees with her points, but the older cats remain against the notion.
- As the sun continues to rise, Tigerstar arrives and is delighted to see his son alive. Shadowsight attempts to greet him, but his injured leg has him wobble which concerns the tabby leader. Tigerstar gently reprimands his son about his disregard of previous advice as both the young tom and Bristlefrost update ShadowClan's leader on the current situation. The leader listens with horror showing in his eyes as he decides to bring Shadowsight back to ShadowClan with him, but his son remains stubborn in his decision to return to the Dark Forest. Tigerstar and Shadowsight argue, but Bristlefrost and Mothwing vouch for Shadowsight's side, with the latter pointing out that if they allow him they might be able to avoid another battle against the Dark Forest. Begrudgingly, Tigerstar relents but asks for his son to rest before returning. Mothwing also shares the sentiment as Shadowsight vows he will return to the awful place as soon as he is able.
