Chapter description[]
- Shadowsight sits between his parents, Tigerstar and Dovewing, in their den as fear settles between them. He recounts that the previous night the pair of them had questioned him rigorously about what had happened between him and Ashfur. The young tom hears angry voices from the camp's main clearing, noting the voices belong to both ShadowClan cats and other Clans. His heart sinks as he knows all the anger is directed at him and how even those close to him seemed betrayed, recalling Puddleshine's mortified expression upon learning what had transpired. The tabby tries once again to convince Tigerstar and Dovewing of what he had seen, stating he had seen both the real Bramblestar and Spiresight speak to him. However, his parents offer no words as he continues to explain himself. Shadowsight notices the fear present in the pair of them and understands that his plea has made no difference for where he currently sits.
- Tigerstar breaks the silence, explaining to his son just how dangerous of a position he is in. Dovewing adds that the other Clan leaders will soon come to question him, but that he should leave before they do. The suggestion shocks Shadowsight as Tigerstar agrees with his mate. The leader explains that everyone within the Clans is furious about Ashfur's escape and that if they find reason to blame the young medicine cat, he might be attacked. He also adds to Shadowsight not to admit he had done anything or what Ashfur had shown him to the other leaders, or the circumstances might turn sour. However, Shadowsight defends himself, knowing what he had seen was the truth and the other leaders derserve to know that. Tigerstar remains unconvinced and decides to go ahead with Dovewing's plan. He calls for Tawnypelt and tells his son that both he and the tortoiseshell warrior will seek refuge with the Tribe of Rushing Water. For a moment, Shadowsight feels the temptation to flee from the Clans and Ashfur, but remains firm in his belief that the Clans need the truth. He believes that with the support of ShadowClan he will be able to convince the Clans and free Bramblestar. Tigerstar shakes his head as Shadowsight watches an exchange between the three warriors that leaves him feeling less confident in who he can trust. Dovewing urges him once more to go with Tawnypelt and he resolves to it as Tawnypelt attempts to cheer him up.
- As the pair begin to sneak out, Tigerstar calls a Clan meeting to make the process easier for them. Shadowsight spots his littermates join their Clanmates and realizes they're in on the plan as well. He continues to follow Tawnypelt, but as they reach the tunnel the drumming of paw steps sound and Lionblaze appears at the entrance. Behind him, Harestar, Mistystar and a crowd of warriors follow, sans SkyClan. With a growl, Lionblaze picks up on the plan of sheltering Shadowsight. Tigerstar defends his son as Lionblaze explains he's trying to right the chaos caused by the young medicine cat. Shadowsight watches as the ShadowClan camp erupts into growls and hisses between each cat. He spots Alderheart and Jayfeather trying to settle cats down but with little success. The other Clan leaders begin accusing Tigerstar of defending his son, regardless of the situation as Tawnypelt steps to join her leader, ready to fight.
- Watching, Shadowsight wails for them to stop and that he will hand himself over willingly to avoid any fights. He is led by Tigerstar to Ashfur's former prison as Lionblaze assigns Plumstone and Bumblestripe to guard him. The acting ThunderClan swings around to confront Tigerstar, stating that he will not be present for the discussion in regards to Shadowsight's case. The medicine cat feels guilty for getting his father into trouble and wonders what else may happen as a result of him losing the trust of the other leaders. Tigerstar stills at Lionblaze's words, and for a moment his son wonders if he'll attack the golden tom. But, the dark tabby turns away and calls over his shoulder that everything is a mistake and that if the Clans survive, they will wonder how a cat could be such a flea-brain. Left with his thoughts, Shadowsight wonders miserably if anyone would ever believe him again.
