Chapter description[]
- It's sunset as the Sisters step toward the Moonpool to begin their ceremony. Snow moves toward Bristlefrost and Shadowsight, as the pair of them are preparing to return to the Dark Forest, when they are interrupted by the sound of splashing. Every cat present is surprised to see Squirrelflight helping Bramblestar out of the water of the Moonpool, and they call out their names joyfully as they pull themselves to the bank. Tigerstar, though pleased to see the ThunderClan cats, quickly asks to confirm if this is the real Bramblestar, which Squirrelflight verifies is correct.
- When the two of them begin explaining to the others briefly what happened, Bristlefrost asks where Rootspring is when he doesn't also emerge from the Moonpool. Squirrelflight tells her that he was right behind him, and should be there, but no one surfaces from the still water. Bramblestar remarks that something must have gone wrong since they had Dark Forest cats following them. Tigerstar suggests that they might need to reconsider their plan, since they were originally going in to rescue Bramblestar and Squirrelflight, and now they've returned. He adds that Rootspring has special gifts, and may be able to find his way back on his own, a suggestion Tree seems horrorstruck by.
- Shadowsight points out Bramblestar and Squirrelflight need medicine cat help, and Mothwing orders Tree to search for some herbs. Tigerstar goes along with him to assist. Bristlefrost makes a point to nod at Tree, silently promising him to do everything she can to save his son. She approaches Snow in order to ask her to proceed with the ceremony that will help her return to the Dark Forest. Shadowsight catches her eye and, when he sees she's talking to Snow, he makes his way over to them and tells her he's coming with too. With Tigerstar gone, the ShadowClan leader can't stop him.
- Snow speaks briefly to the Moonpool before instructing Bristlefrost and Shadowsight to lie down beside it and close their eyes. The Sisters begin quietly chanting, and seemingly within moments, they are back in the Dark Forest. They begin to look for signs of Rootspring, and soon hear movement. They reach the top of a rise and look down into a misty clearing, which slowly reveals Rootspring and a crowd of Dark Forest cats. Rootspring and Snowtuft are circling each other, while Ashfur watches in satisfaction. Shadowsight looks upset to see Snowtuft facing off against his friend, as both he and Bristlefrost assume the white tom is no longer on the side of the living Clans. After a jeering yowl from Ashfur, Rootspring and Snowtuft spring into what is clearly a fight to the death as the Dark Forest cats egg them on - while the spirit cats cheer gleefully along with them.
