- Rootspring goes back to camp to tell his Clanmates what he witnessed at the Moonpool. At the border SkyClan shared with WindClan, he meets a patrol consisting of Hawkwing, Mintfur, Macgyver, and Bellaleaf. The deputy asks the yellow tom what he is doing alone, telling him that Ashfur had escaped and could harm any cat traveling alone. He explains that he is taking the patrol to look for the escaped prisoner, while Leafstar is about to take another patrol to discuss with the other leaders. Rootspring quickly explains that the dark tom wreaking havoc on the Clans had taken Squirrelflight and jumped into the Moonpool, and after a few minutes, both did not appear.
- The others share questioning looks, but Hawkwing tells the yellow warrior to report to their leader. Rootspring arrives at SkyClan camp, spotting Leafstar with the patrol Hawkwing had mentioned. Leafstar invites the SkyClan warrior on her patrol after learning that he had news about Ashfur. Rootspring explains on the way that after the Gathering, himself and Bristlefrost had come across Squirrelflight, who was trying to save Bramblestar's body. He reports that they persuaded the ThunderClan leader not to save her mate for the sake of the Clans. He tells the patrol that he walked with her to the Moonpool, wondering if she needed a cat from a different Clan to talk with. Rootspring states that Ashfur appeared, attacking Squirrelflight, and dragging her into the Moonpool. Leafstar expresses her surprise, while Rootspring adds that neither came out.
- The other cats on the patrol try to come up with explanations of where the two ended up. The SkyClan leader declares that they will have to report Rootspring's news to the other Clan leaders. Cherrytail, still not believing what Rootspring had told them, asks if the yellow tom was confident that he had not imagined it, citing that he had seen things more strangely than others. Tree defends his son, reminding them that Rootspring was the first to see Bramblestar's spirit. Leafstar expresses her confidence in Rootspring, but tells the patrol that the other Clans may not believe or accept what Rootspring had witnessed.
- The patrol reaches ShadowClan's camp, hearing Tigerstar telling Lionblaze how mouse-brained he was being. This starts a physical argument between the two toms. Mistystar breaks up the argument, telling them that fighting will not help. Jayfeather adds that they need to concentrate on how to defeat Ashfur, but the entangled toms don't seem to notice. Lionblaze insults Tigerstar's son, Shadowsight, to which the ShadowClan leader attacks Lionblaze. The gathered cats try to intervene, but Rootspring sees that he has to do something. He steps up, shouting for the cats to listen to him. He retells of how Ashfur and Squirrelflight had entered the Moonpool, finishing by telling them that they cannot argue amongst themselves.
- A moment of silence occurs, before Mistystar states that this information changes lots of things. Alderheart asks if anyone has every gone through the Moonpool. Shadowsight, a voice that startles Rootspring, states that he had, when he ate deathberries, telling the cats he had gone to the Place of No Stars. Leafstar recognizes that Squirrelflight must be in danger. Meanwhile, the ThunderClan deputy states that Shadowsight is to blame for setting Ashfur free, and he now has to answer more questions. Rootspring defends his friend, with Tigerstar backing him up, citing that the medicine cat saw that Bramblestar was still alive. Cats look at each other uneasily. Jayfeather breaks this tension, telling them that they should actually go to the Moonpool, and they should gather the other medicine cats. Others agree, declaring that they will fetch the other medicine cats.
