"As I said, I was able to visit the Dark Forest. I've explored a bit. And, for better or worse, no cat has spent as much time with, or knows Ashfur, like I do. [..] I can go after [Squirrelflight and Ashfur]. I know I can help. Someone just has to teach me how to safely reach the Dark Forest."

Chapter description[]

Mistystar sends Jayclaw to fetch Willowshine, while Leafstar sends Rootspring to fetch Frecklewish and Fidgetflake. Lionblaze suggests that Harestar sends Bristlefrost to fetch Kestrelflight from WindClan, as she is extremely fast. Harestar agrees, and tells Bristlefrost that if Crowfeather gives her any trouble, tell him that he sent her, and that he would explain later. Harestar declares that he thinks only leaders and medicine cats should go to the Moonpool, as they cannot have everyone crowding around it. Lionblaze asks if Tigerstar should come with them, as he has proved himself to be untrustworthy when it comes to his son, Shadowsight. Tigerstar retorts in response, about being called untrustworthy.
Bristlefrost emerges from the forest and starts to run, feeling relieved to leave all the arguing and hostility behind her and just race along in the breeze. After bursting out of the trees, she continues along towards the lakeshore, splashing through the stream which once was the border between ShadowClan and ThunderClan, but now passed through SkyClan. She crosses into ThunderClan, and after reaching the bank of the border stream with WindClan, she waits, panting, for a patrol to give her permission to cross. She scents a WindClan patrol heading towards her, consisting of Breezepelt, Crouchfoot and Songpaw. Bristlefrost groans inwardly at meeting Breezepelt, as he was probably the most unwelcoming tom in WindClan, with an exception of Crowfeather.
Breezepelt demands to know what Bristlefrost is doing there, and Bristlefrost dips her head politely and informs him that she needs to visit his camp, as she has a message for Kestrelflight. Breezepelt becomes suspicious of her and questions her business in WindClan, as she is a ThunderClan warrior. Bristlefrost repeats what she said, telling him that Harestar sent her. Unfortunately, Breezepelt becomes even more suspicious and Bristlefrost tells him that it is urgent and she is here because she is fast. She asks again if she may visit Kestrelflight. However, Breezepelt is unconvinced and demands to know what she wants to talk to Kestrelflight about. Bristlefrost feels annoyed that he was holding her up, as Squirrelflight could be in increasing danger with every heartbeat. She then decides to tell him why she needs to speak to Kestrelflight.
Breezepelt appears uncomfortable when the Dark Forest is mentioned, and asks, his suspicious attitude falling away, if she really means that the others mean to venture there to save Squirrelflight. Bristlefrost admits that she is unsure, and that is for the medicine cats to decide. Breezepelt interrupts her, telling her that she has no idea what the Dark Forest is like, as she wasn't even born the last time the Dark Forest haunted the Clans, and that he would bet a moon of dawn patrols that she can't even begin to imagine it. Privately, Bristlefrost agrees with him, but refuses to show Breezepelt any signs of fear or hesitation, and responds that the safety of the Clans is the only thing the currently matters.
Breezepelt stares at her and then agrees to let her cross the border. Bristlefrost leaps over the stream and follows Breezepelt to the WindClan camp. Crouchfoot and Songpaw appear to be shocked, as they stare round-eyed at Bristlefrost and Breezepelt, after listening to their conversation. After reaching their camp, she secretly thought that it would be strange to sleep in their dens, as she would get thorns in her pelt. Crowfeather appears, fetched by Breezepelt, and demands an explanation as well. Frustrated, Bristlefrost repeats what she told Breezepelt earlier. Crowfeather allows her to speak to Kestrelflight, but insists that he comes with her.
Bristlefrost then explains the situation to Kestrelflight, and he agrees, almost at once, to come with her, but not without commenting that he is unsure of what good it might do. He then gets up and prepares to leave. Crowfeather states that Squirrelflight may be going willingly with Ashfur, as she and Bramblestar had their quarrels, like the situation with the Sisters and Squirrelflight lying about Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and Hollyleaf being her kits. Bristlefrost defends her leader, stating that what Squirrelflight and Bramblestar have is true love, and this manages to convince Crowfeather. Crowfeather leaves Hootwhisker in charge while Bristlefrost, him, and Kestrelflight venture towards the Moonpool.
After arriving, Bristlefrost notes that all the medicine cats and leaders had come, except Tigerstar who had sent his deputy Cloverfoot. Jayfeather addresses the need to figure out how a living cat can enter the Dark Forest. Puddleshine suggests trying to contact StarClan, but the medicine cats try and fail. While they do this, the others explore the area, with Rootspring telling them where the kidnapping had occured. The next idea to come to mind is sending cats to swim into the Place of No Stars, but the RiverClan cats test and fail again.
They come to the realization that not only Squirrelflight and Bramblestar's lives are on the line, but many other spirits of cats who had died recently, many of whom had showed up in the SkyClan camp during the Sisters' ceremony. Frecklewish states that the reason Squirrelflight was probably able to enter the Dark Forest was because she had a dead cat "guiding" her. Shadowsight interrupts, stating that he is able to visit the Dark Forest, and knows Ashfur better than most cats. He continues that all he needs is someone to teach him how to reach the Dark Forest safely.
