Detailed plot description[]
- ThunderClan, a group of wild cats, loses a battle with RiverClan over Sunningrocks. When ThunderClan's leader, Bluestar, confides in her medicine cat, Spottedleaf, about ThunderClan's lack of warriors, Spottedleaf receives a sign through a shooting star that fire will save ThunderClan.
- After dreaming of catching a mouse, a kittypet named Rusty decides to explore the forest. There, he meets Graypaw, a ThunderClan apprentice, who tells Rusty about the four Clans. They are interrupted by a ThunderClan warrior, Lionheart, and Bluestar, who offers Rusty a place in ThunderClan, as she is impressed by his curiosity and his courage. Deciding to join ThunderClan, Rusty meets Whitestorm and Lionheart and is guided to the ThunderClan camp, where he is confronted by Longtail. The two cats fight, and Longtail tears off Rusty's collar, which Bluestar takes as a sign that StarClan accepts Rusty. She renames him Firepaw, but they are interrupted by Ravenpaw and Tigerclaw, who bring back the deputy, Redtail's body. Tigerclaw claims that Oakheart, the RiverClan deputy, killed him, and thus, Tigerclaw killed Oakheart for revenge. Bluestar names Lionheart her new deputy and assigns Redtail's apprentice, Dustpaw, to Darkstripe.
- Over the next two moons, Firepaw trains with Lionheart, Tigerclaw, Graypaw, and Ravenpaw. On the day of his first training assessment, Firepaw is sent to hunt near Twolegplace, where he reunites with his sister, Princess. When he returns to the others, Tigerclaw sends him to speak with Bluestar, who questions his loyalty since Tigerclaw had seen Firepaw with Princess. Firepaw reassures her, and she praises his performance in his assessment. Lionheart soon sends Firepaw out to hunt, and he is attacked by Yellowfang, the former ShadowClan medicine cat. Firepaw defeats her and takes pity on her, and he feeds her and himself. They are discovered by Bluestar's patrol, and while Yellowfang is allowed to stay with ThunderClan to regain her strength, Firepaw is made responsible for her as punishment for breaking the warrior code. Bluestar also decides to mentor Firepaw herself, and over time, Firepaw bonds with Yellowfang.
- Firepaw attends his first Gathering, where he overhears Ravenpaw say that Redtail had declared Oakheart dead during the battle with RiverClan, contradicting Tigerclaw's story. The ShadowClan leader, Brokenstar, reveals that ShadowClan has driven out WindClan and warns of a ShadowClan cat who was exiled. Bluestar refuses to give up territory to Brokenstar and will not throw out Yellowfang, despite the Clan's assumption that she is the cat Brokenstar warned of. The next day, Bluestar takes Firepaw, Ravenpaw, Graypaw, and Tigerclaw to Mothermouth with her to speak with StarClan, noticing WindClan's absence from their territory on the way. While Bluestar settles by the Moonstone, Firepaw ponders the dream he had had the night before about a battle. Bluestar urgently begins to lead the patrol back home, meeting Barley, who warns them of rats. The patrol ends up fighting the rats, and Bluestar loses a life. They return home to find ShadowClan attacking their camp, and though ThunderClan manages to fend them off, Lionheart and Rosetail are killed. Tigerclaw becomes deputy, and Bluestar acknowledges Yellowfang's help in the battle, while Ravenpaw ominously notes Tigerclaw taking charge.
- While rolling in wild garlic to soothe his rat bites, Firepaw overhears Tigerclaw accusing Ravenpaw of betraying ThunderClan with Brokenstar. ThunderClan soon discovers that Frostfur's kits are missing and that Spottedleaf has been killed. Believing Yellowfang to be innocent despite the Clan's accusations, Bluestar sends Firepaw to find her. Before he does, he speaks with Ravenpaw, who reveals that Tigerclaw murdered Redtail. Firepaw and Graypaw take Ravenpaw away from ThunderClan and tell him to go to Barley, and Firepaw promises to tell ThunderClan that Ravenpaw is dead to protect him. Firepaw and Graypaw find Yellowfang, who informs them that Clawface had stolen the kits and that Brokenstar trains kits too young. While Firepaw and Graypaw retrieve Whitestorm's patrol to help fight ShadowClan, Yellowfang gathers together the exiled ShadowClan elders and other cats who oppose Brokenstar, and they attack ShadowClan, driving out Brokenstar. The ThunderClan patrol returns home with the kits, and Yellowfang becomes their new medicine cat, while Firepaw and Graypaw are given their warrior names, Fireheart and Graystripe.
- At the next Gathering, Nightpelt announces that he will be the new leader of ShadowClan. Crookedstar, RiverClan's leader, severs his agreement to allow ShadowClan to hunt in the river. When he and Nightpelt assume that they can hunt on WindClan's territory, Bluestar argues that WindClan must return. Fireheart makes plans to tell Bluestar about Ravenpaw and Tigerclaw. That night, he dreams of Spottedleaf, who speaks of the fire prophecy. The next morning, Bluestar sends Fireheart and Graystripe to retrieve WindClan, and they successfully find the missing Clan and lead them back home to their territory. Bluestar assigns them apprentices: Fireheart is given Cinderpaw and Graystripe is given Brackenpaw, while Longtail is assigned Swiftpaw. Fireheart and Graystripe take their apprentices hunting, and they discover that the river has frozen over. Graystripe attempts to hunt prey on the ice, but falls through, and he is rescued by a RiverClan warrior named Silverstream.
- Graystripe becomes ill, but is not staying in camp, raising Fireheart's suspicions. Fireheart begins to bond with Sandpaw, who apologizes for teasing him, and they end up playing while gathering herbs for Yellowfang. They are interrupted by Onewhisker, who asks ThunderClan for help, as ShadowClan and RiverClan are attacking WindClan. Graystripe behaves strangely on the way, showing interest in RiverClan's motives. During the battle, Graystripe stops Fireheart from fighting Silverstream and reveals that they are in love, to Fireheart's horror. Upon returning to the battle, Fireheart is attacked by Leopardfur, but when he calls to Tigerclaw for help, the deputy leaves him, and Graystripe helps instead. After the battle, Darkstripe notes Fireheart's interaction with Silverstream, and Tigerclaw takes interest. Fireheart promises to support Graystripe, and he feels confident as a warrior of ThunderClan.
Changes from Into The Wild & Fire and Ice[]
- Volume 1 covers Into the Wild and the first half of Fire and Ice. As noted by the writers and illustrators, scenes were altered or moved around in the adaptation.[7] The following is a list of notable differences in the books:
- Rusty visits Princess in the same way as Smudge,[9] whereas in the original arc he finds his sister by chance after becoming a warrior, and struggles to recognize her.[10][11]
- Firepaw reunites with his sister Princess during his hunting assessment[12] instead of Smudge.[13]
- Swiftkit is present among the kits that Clawface steals,[14] replacing Brightkit.[15]
- Whiteclaw's death and the battle at the falls is skipped over,[16] though Fireheart and Graystripe state that a RiverClan patrol spotted them on their way home and that Graystripe fell in the river.[17]
- Swiftpaw is apprenticed alongside Cinderpaw and Brackenpaw,[18] when he was originally apprenticed prior to Fireheart and Graystripe searching for WindClan.[19]
- Cinderpaw is still Fireheart's apprentice at the end of the book when ThunderClan aids WindClan when RiverClan and ShadowClan attack,[20] when in Fire and Ice her accident has already happened.[21]
- Fireheart discovers Graystripe's relationship with Silverstream during the battle against ShadowClan and RiverClan,[22] rather than by following Graystripe.[23]
- Cloudkit was born in Fire and Ice,[24] though he will not be featured until the second volume.[25]
