Chapter description

Soon after Fireheart sorts out patrols, Leopardfur arrives with a RiverClan patrol to retrieve Silverstream's kits, and to Fireheart's horror, Graystripe decides to let RiverClan have his kits. The two best friends take the kits to the stepping stones, where Graystripe reveals his plan to join RiverClan, and he and Fireheart say their goodbyes. Afterwards, Bluestar tells Fireheart to accompany her to the Moonstone to speak with StarClan, despite his misgivings about crossing WindClan territory. On the way, he tries to convince her of her Clanmates' loyalty, but she is not persuaded. When they reach WindClan territory, they encounter a patrol led by Mudclaw, who aggressively turns them away, and Fireheart convinces Bluestar to leave.

During a training session, Fireheart admonishes Cloudpaw for not taking the warrior code seriously, and he complains to Sandstorm about his apprentice's behavior. The two warriors decide to track Cloudpaw, and they follow him to Twolegplace, where they briefly meet Princess. She tells them that she has not seen Cloudpaw, but is relieved to hear that he is doing well. Fireheart and Sandstorm track Cloudpaw to a Twoleg nest, where they find him begging for food. The apprentice ends up stuck in a Twoleg trap, and as Sandstorm and Fireheart try to help him, he swears his loyalty to ThunderClan. Princess manages to free her son and Cloudpaw promises to become a great warrior to make up for it.

Fireheart struggles to become accustomed to his duties as deputy but is aided by Whitestorm. He dreams of Spottedleaf, who warns him that ThunderClan is in danger, and he wakes to the scent of fire. As the Clan evacuates, they find that Halftail, Patchpelt, and Bramblekit are missing, and Fireheart and Yellowfang return to camp. While Yellowfang retrieves Halftail, Fireheart rescues Bramblekit from a burning tree and grabs Patchpelt, but he and Yellowfang are separated by flames. Fireheart takes Patchpelt and Bramblekit back to the Clan, where Cinderpelt announces that Patchpelt has died. The Clan crosses the river with RiverClan's aid, and Crookedstar allows them to stay with RiverClan in the meantime.

Fireheart and Graystripe return to ThunderClan camp together to look for Yellowfang and Halftail, finding the forest and the camp destroyed. They find Halftail's body, and while Graystripe buries him, Fireheart searches out Yellowfang. He finds her in the medicine den, where she lies dying. Before she dies, she tells Fireheart that she poisoned Brokentail with deathberries, that she is grateful to Bluestar, and that she regrets not being able to witness his destiny. Following Yellowfang's death, Bluestar takes ThunderClan home, refusing to let Graystripe help rebuild. Fireheart encourages and reassures his Clan, but as he does so, Bluestar furiously interrupts to declare war on StarClan. While she does this, a dog pack escapes from its cage and runs free.
