"When I saw ThunderClan at Sunningrocks…the strong helping the weak…and I knew you and the others had gone to front the pack…I recognized my Clan again. I know not all was lost. I know they were loyal. I know StarClan was still with us. Knowing that, I couldn't leave you to face the danger alone. Fireheart, I see the truth now. 'Fire alone will save our Clan…' You are the fire that will save ThunderClan. You will be a great leader, with the warmth to guide the Clan and fierceness to protect it. You will be Firestar…the flame of ThunderClan!"

Chapter description[]

Fireheart and Sandstorm watch over ThunderClan camp in the aftermath of the fire, watching as the former's apprentice and Brightpaw return from hunting. He reflects that ThunderClan is doing well to rebuild following the fire, but he has concerns about the coming leaf-bare. He goes to visit Bluestar about the coming Gathering, warning her that dog scent has been found around Fourtrees. The leader, however, instead blames WindClan despite the lack of evidence. That night on their way to the Gathering, Cinderpelt warns Fireheart she has had a dream from StarClan about something bad coming. The tom leaves her to catch up with Bluestar, promising to help figure out what the dream could mean.
At the Gathering, Runningnose reveals that Nightstar has passed away and that StarClan had given them a new leader. The cat in question is Tigerclaw, now Tigerstar, much to the dismay of ThunderClan. RiverClan also reveals new leadership as Leopardstar reports the death of Crookedstar. Bluestar decides to speak next and accuses WindClan of stealing prey, despite there being no direct proof. Despite her hostility to WindClan, when RiverClan mentions hardship with prey, Bluestar offers words of encouragement and subsequently, the Gathering ends. Fireheart questions Bluestar, wondering if she knew Leopardstar meant that RiverClan wants Sunningrocks. Bluestar, however, says little and believes they would uphold Crookedstar's offer.
In ThunderClan camp, Fireheart and the other ThunderClan cats talk about the Gathering. Fearful of Tigerstar, Fireheart sends out patrols to the borders for peace of mind, and Longtail asks him about the apprentices that are due for their warrior assessments. The deputy reassures him he will speak with Bluestar about it. As he walks away, he overhears Sorrelkit squeal as Bramblekit plays too rough with her. Goldenflower gently scolds her son as she and Fireheart talk about Tigerstar. The she-cat asks him to be the one to tell her kits the truth when the time comes. Fireheart talks again with Bluestar as she remains adamant that WindClan has stolen prey and wants to retaliate. The deputy tries to convince her she is wrong, but leaves her den unable to do so. He instead dreams of Spottedleaf and Yellowfang who tell him that no battle will be fought. When he wakes up, he decides to have Ravenpaw help communicate between ThunderClan and WindClan. Bluestar leads a patrol of cats to Fourtrees to meet with Tallstar and the two Clans agree to not fight. Afterwards, in camp, Bluestar reprimands Fireheart for betraying her and calls him and ThunderClan traitors.
Bluestar opts to lead the dawn patrol with Fireheart, Longtail, and their apprentices. They head to Sunningrocks to find a RiverClan patrol led by Leopardstar waiting for them. A fight ensues, and Fireheart sends Swiftpaw to fetch reinforcements, despite the younger cat wanting to fight. As ThunderClan is quickly overpowered, Firheart spots Bluestar being cornered by Stonefur and Mistyfoot. To stop them from hurting her, he reveals to them that she is their real mother. Appalled, the two RiverClan cats retreat as the second ThunderClan patrol arrives. Graystripe warns Fireheart of Leopardstar's attack, which saves his friend's life but leads to him being exiled by the leader. ThunderClan remains victorious over Sunningrocks, and Graystripe is reluctantly allowed to return to ThunderClan. Back in camp, Bluestar only names Cloudpaw a warrior, much to the displeasure of the other apprentices and Longtail. The following day, Fireheart and Sandstorm spend time together but end up arguing when speaking about who should mentor Bramblekit and Tawnykit. As they do, Dustpelt interrupts with Fernpaw who explains that Swiftpaw and Brightpaw are missing and went to Snakerocks. The tom takes Sandstorm, Graystripe, Whitestorm, and Cloudtail to investigate and they find the body of Swiftpaw, and the barely conscious form of Brightpaw. They take Brightpaw back to camp where Cinderpelt treats her, and Bluestar gives the apprentice a warrior name in case she does not survive—Lostface. Afterwards, she names Bramblekit and Tawnykit as apprentices.
Some time later, Fireheart asks Lostface if she remembers what had happened that night, but the young cat is unable to recall it. Cinderpelt reassures the deputy that she just needs time and they will soon understand. As they talk, Longtail tells him he has scented Tigerstar near Snakerocks multiple times. At first, Fireheart thinks it is a trap but Cinderpelt thinks otherwise, so he instead organizes a patrol to investigate. There, they find a pack of dogs living at the rock formation and a trail of dead rabbits leading back to ThunderClan camp. Fireheart and the patrol head back, finding the body of Brindleface along the way—a means of giving the dogs the taste for cat blood. The ginger tom gets of ThunderClan to shelter at Sunningrocks while he and the warriors divert the dogs to the gorge.
As the plan starts, Fireheart soon begins leading the ravenous pack to the gorge but is attacked by Tigerstar. As one of the dogs goes to kill the ginger tom, Bluestar attacks it and sends it and herself falling into the falling water below. Fireheart dives after her, but is overwhelmed by the current. Luckily, Stonefur and Mistyfoot appear and help him and Bluestar to shore. Bluestar manages to make peace with her estranged kits as she lay dying. She speaks with Fireheart too, honoring his courage and revealing the prophecy she had received moons before about him. The she-cat tells him he will be a great leader, hailing him as Firestar, the flame of ThunderClan.
