- it is raining, and Twigbranch tells Flypaw to hurry, as she wants to go hunting. The apprentice inquires about Finleap acting nervous around Twigbranch, and she does not want to answer. Twigbranch reflects on how Finleap has isolated himself from the Clan and not even made an effort to fit in—although he has stopped talking about having kits, she wonders if he really understands that she is not ready. Flypaw asks if they will hunt, and Twigbranch answers that they will go somewhere new; Flypaw is excited. She veers away from the SkyClan border, not wanting to think about her kin, and they make their way to the edge of the territory. The apprentice immediately notices a mouse's burrow, and proposes that they dig down into it. The mouse darts out, and Flypaw quickly catches it. Twigbranch tells her to save it for the Clan, but she then catches a scent that she is certain is Tree's. She tells Flypaw to hide the mouse, hoping that it means that Violetshine stayed with him.
- Twigbranch scrambles up the rough terrain, and tells Flypaw that she just wants to check something. Tree's scent grows stronger, and she hopes that Violetshine is there as well; she calls Tree's name, and tells Flypaw to be careful. Tree emerges from a bush, and tells her that Violetshine left with SkyClan. The three cats go into his makeshift den, and Tree explains that he wanted to stay at the lake, but Violetshine chose to leave. Twigbranch wonders what the point of love is if it cannot keep cats together. Tree lets Flypaw eat the rabbit he caught, and says that the Clans never listened to him when he was a mediator, and his old life no longer holds the same appeal, as he misses Violetshine. Twigbranch is sympathetic, and Tree suggests that the weather might be a sign, as SkyClan was the fifth sapling in the medicine cats' vision. Twigbranch wonders if the storm would be enough to convince Leafstar to return, and says that they can go after SkyClan and make them change their minds. Tree is doubtful, but Twigbranch and Flypaw tell him that they must bring cats together to speak out and convince the leaders to act; if they bring SkyClan back, they can then persuade the Clans to let them stay. Twigbranch is hopeful, and says that she will ask Bramblestar for permission.
