Below contains in-depth information for chapter two of The Raging Storm. If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
Violetshine is patrolling with Mintfur, Sandynose, Frecklewish, and Fidgetflake. They walk into a glade where they find wood sorrel, and the two medicine cats begin collecting it. The three warriors discuss ShadowClan. Sandynose states that they didn't fit in while they were sharing the SkyClancamp. Mintfur and Sandynose both agree that it was good of Leafstar to return their land without a fight, and Violetshine reminds them that Tigerstar did thank them. Sandynose sniffs, stating that he owes them more than thanks while Frecklewish adds that everything is how it should be. He continues, ranting about how Tigerstar and Dovewing leaving their Clans. Frecklewish shakes out her fur, saying Tigerstar has made mistakes, but StarClan guided his paws and made him leader. Sandynose meows that he might only think that it's important for ShadowClan to stay by the lake.
Mintfur starts to head towards the ditch where the ShadowClan border lies, and she states that there is no use in worrying as SkyClan has been through too much trouble in the past moons. Violetshine pads after her, wondering if there can truly be more trouble even after the storm. The two SkyClan medicine cats follow the warriors while Sandynose grumbles. At the top of the rise, Mintfur stiffens as she smells a mouse. Sandynose is already in a hunting crouch and is creeping towards a ditch, and Violetshine pricks her ears, letting the tangy scent of mouse remind her she hasn't eaten all day.
She hangs back with Fidgetflake and Frecklewish while Mintfur and Sandynose work together and catch the mouse. Frecklewish thanks StarClan for the prey while Sandynose hops out of the ditch, carrying the portly mouse. Frecklewish and Mintfur express their gratitude for the prey. Sandynose drops the mouse and swaps glances with her as he reminds her that they have another mouth to feed. Mintfur rolls her eyes, stating that he means Tree. Sandynose and Mintfur complain about the loner. Violetshine bristles at their words, snapping that he can take whatever prey he wants since he is part of the Clan. Mintfur wonders how, since he doesn't even know the warrior code. Violetshine meows that he didn't join as a warrior but rather a mediator.
Mintfur continues to argue while Violetshine defends Tree. Frecklewish defends his place in the Clan as well, but Sandynose continues to complain, and Violetshine stands up for Tree. Mintfur's whiskers twitch in amusement as she jokes that Violetshine seems very fond of him. Violetshine's pelt burns as she asks so what, as she and Tree do have a special bond. Fidgetflake's anxious call to Sandynose makes the group turn as the medicine cat asks Sandynose if he can smell ShadowClan beside the ditch, and Sandynose says yes. Mintfur hurries to join them and breathes that the ShadowClan cats have crossed the border into their territory. Sandynose follows the trail which leads to a bush, and he states they don't smell like cats that stayed in SkyClan's camp. Violetshine remembers that ShadowClan has cats who grew up outside the territories who could've accidentally strayed across the border. Mintfur and Sandynose both agree that it wasn't an accident before going back to camp to tell Leafstar.
Back at camp, Sandynose, in a fit of rage, is angrily telling Leafstar what they smelled. Violetshine recalls Frecklewish and Fidgetflake trying to reason with him but failing as he continues arguing with the brown-and-cream tabby. She sees Hawkwing clearing weeds with his ears pricked, listening, and Tree watching the two cats. Macgyver, Nettlesplash, Bellaleaf, Blossomheart, Harrybrook, Pigeonpaw, and Nectarpaw all pause their work to listen to Sandynose and Leafstar. Leafstar finally states that they shouldn't jump to conclusions right as Plumwillow pokes her head out to see what's going on.
Pigeonpaw and Nectarpaw, trying to tell the warrior what's going on, start to argue whether ShadowClan invaded or not, and Sandynose snaps that their scent was on their territory. SkyClan argues, some cats saying it was on purpose, while others say it was a clumsy apprentice. Violetshine agrees that it was a clueless apprentice since they had brought home new cats. Leafstar silences the cats, stating they will re-mark the border and do three border patrols instead of two. Sandynose argues that remarking them won't make a difference, but Leafstar frowns at this, saying that ShadowClan is rebuilding and Tigerstar might have disloyal warriors that he doesn't know about.
Macgyver says that this could be a sign that ShadowClan is a threat, and Hawkwing says that he has a point. Leafstar asks Tree what he thinks. Tree mews that if this does mean that Tigerstar is dangerous, he may be hoping that SkyClan will react as an excuse to generate conflict. He tells Leafstar that they need more information before they act, and Leafstar asks if he will speak with Tigerstar. Tree says that would be too direct, instead suggesting that he will hang around the border and chat with a ShadowClan warrior. Leafstar and Sandynose agree to the idea, and Leafstar tells Violetshine to go with him.
Tree and Violetshine head out of camp, and Tree begins heading away from where the SkyClan patrol scented ShadowClan on their land, saying that they shouldn't talk to a ShadowClan cat right next to their intruding scent trail. Violetshine complements him on his cleverness, and Tree teases her before breaking into a run. Violetshine dashes after him toward the border that leads to the lake. She tells him to slow down lest they accidentally cross the border, and Tree halts, saying that he didn't realize they were so close. Violetshine asks him if he couldn't smell it, and Tree says that all Clan scents smell the same to him. Violetshine wonders if Tree will ever settle into Clan life.
As Violetshine thinks, Tree spots Cloverfoot, a ShadowClan warrior, hunting near the border. Tree and Violetshine strike up a conversation to get the gray tabby's attention, and Cloverfoot growls that she's trying to hunt. Tree apologizes for the disturbance and turns to walk away, but pauses to mew that prey must be running well in ShadowClan. Cloverfoot replies that ShadowClan has plenty of prey, and Tree asks her if ShadowClan is doing okay. Cloverfoot says that it is, and Tree asks more questions about Tigerstar and Rowanclaw, to which Cloverfoot replies that Tigerstar is a much better leader than his father was.
Tree says that Hawkwing told him ShadowClan is keeping the borders well-marked, and Violetshine adds that it's hard to stray across a well-marked border. Cloverfoot wonders what Violetshine is getting at, and Tree quickly changes the subject, asking how the cats from the Twolegplace are doing. Violetshine says that they must find it hard to recognize scent markers, and Tree adds that just now, he almost ran across the border without noticing. Cloverfoot backs away with a sudden distrust in her eyes, and says that she better get back to ShadowClan before disappearing.
Violetshine anxiously asks Tree if they gave away too much, but Tree says that they gave away just the right amount. He begins heading back toward camp, and says that they now know that Tigerstar is a strong leader with plans for ShadowClan, so they had to let him know that SkyClan won't be caught off-guard. Violetshine asks Tree if he thinks ShadowClan is a threat, and Tree hesitates before replying that he doesn't know, but SkyClan must be vigilant in the future.
