"I wasn't just wrong about Juniperclaw. The storm StarClan warned us about is here, and I drove SkyClan away. I was so focused on rebuilding ShadowClan that I ignored the warning of my ancestors."

Chapter description[]

Since sunhigh, Alderheart had been waiting along the ShadowClan border with Bramblestar. Getting impatient, the ThunderClan medicine cat asks if they can go ahead and cross the border, but the dark tabby tom urges that they cannot afford to do anything wrong before challenging Tigerstar about Juniperclaw. Alderheart brings up that Tigerstar has to listen to them, as they have evidence, but Bramblestar points out his youth and the things he needs his Clan to leave in the past, such as him running away from a cat from another Clan. The ThunderClan leader tells Alderheart that Tigerstar can easily deny the accusation because he has his Clan behind him.
At that moment, a ShadowClan patrol of Strikestone, Blazepaw, and Snaketooth come from the bushes, with the latter confronting the ThunderClan cats. After the ShadowClan patrol bickers on how "the sun always shines in ThunderClan territory", Bramblestar demands them to escort Alderheart and him to Tigerstar. On the way back to ShadowClan camp, Strikestone and Snaketooth boast about how much territory they have to patrol and how much prey they have now that SkyClan has left, causing Alderheart to wonder aloud if they are not worried by the storm. Strikestone shrugs it off as the cats enter ShadowClan camp. Alderheart notices that no cat is troubled that they themselves drove SkyClan away, while Scorchfur reports to Tigerstar that Bramblestar had come.
Clearly wary, Tigerstar welcomes the ThunderClan leader, and Bramblestar starts the conversation by asking him if he had heard what had happened to RiverClan, as they are now sheltering with WindClan. Tigerstar states that the RiverClan cats could've came to ShadowClan, while Alderheart asks about Shadowkit's seizures. While telling her kits to settle down, Dovewing asks if they had anymore to talk about, which Bramblestar replies that they need to discuss something else. Puddleshine greets Alderheart as Bramblestar explains that the dark ginger medicine cat told him that Shadowkit had seen Juniperclaw taking deathberry seeds and Violetshine saw him next to the SkyClan fresh-kill pile.
Nearby cats such as Dovewing, Tawnypelt, and Cloverfoot look up from their current occupations as Strikestone defends his littermate. Tigerstar states that he had already closed the matter, and SkyClan is now gone. Dovewing prompts Tigerstar, wanting a clear answer on whether or not Juniperclaw poisoned Sparrowpelt, while Bramblestar brings up the fact that a Clan deputy capable of such rogue-like tricks should not deserve the position at all. Dovewing urges her mate not to ignore the potential poisoning, reminding Tigerstar what happened the last time ShadowClan turned to rogues, so the ShadowClan leader asks Scorchfur to fetch Juniperclaw, the latter hunting in nearby ditches.
Juniperclaw enters the now silent ShadowClan camp, with Strikestone and Tigerstar prompting him to deny the accusations of poisoning the fresh-kill pile. Juniperclaw indirectly admits that he did poison Sparrowpelt, causing Strikestone and Tigerstar to curl their lip at him, the former asking if he learned nothing from Darktail's reign. The ShadowClan leader strips the misled warrior of his deputyship, and nods to Tawnypelt and Scorchfur to guard him in the warriors' den. Turning to Bramblestar, Tigerstar states that he had thought Juniperclaw's time with Darktail would lead him to have more faith in the warrior code, but admits his mistake. The ThunderClan leader understands why he did it, calling it a noble gesture.
Tigerstar adds that that was not the only thing he was wrong about as he stopped listening to his ancestors for the sake of driving out SkyClan. At that moment, Pouncekit and Lightkit tell Dovewing that they are hungry and need fresh-kill. Their mother asks them to share something with Shadowkit, but the sisters tell Dovewing that Shadowkit isn't in camp. Dovewing and Tigerstar urgently ask where the young kit is, so Lightkit explains that he was playing a game where he had to do something to save the Clans, which he could not reveal to Lightkit and Pouncekit. Tigerstar orders a search of the camp, while ushering Tawnypelt to inform Harestar and Mistystar about his disappearance. He notices that Juniperclaw is gone, but disregards it. Bramblestar tells the young leader to have faith, as when the Clans work together, anything can be achieved.
