Chapter description[]
- Violetshine narrows her eyes against the wind and rain, growing protective at the thought of the kits inside her. Tree walks next to her, and she recalls how Leafstar had sent a pair of cats to each of the Clans to ask the leaders for support in facing ShadowClan. Violetshine is hopeful as she, Hawkwing, Leafstar, Frecklewish, and many other cats make their way to ShadowClan's camp. She sees that the river encircling RiverClan's camp has consumed it entirely, and Leafstar says that the Clans will survive. The cats cross the river using a fallen tree, and Violetshine goes with Tree. The kits inside her make it difficult to balance on the slippery trunk, and she is nervous as she crosses. Violetshine reassures Tree, but a sudden wave crashes into her, knocking Hootwhisker, Lizardtail, and her off the bridge. She flails against the roaring current, and grasps onto a root, terrified. Violetshine cannot drag herself to the shore, and she sees Hootwhisker and Lizardtail clinging to a rock. Tree calls her name, and she is determined to not let go for the sake of her kits. Violetshine tries to calm down, and suddenly catches sight of a kit thrashing in the water. It is Shadowkit, and despite Tree's panic, she realizes that she has to let go in order to save him. As she plans her dive, Juniperclaw suddenly leaps into the water and grabs Shadowkit.
- Violetshine is shocked upon seeing Juniperclaw, and Shadowkit is in his jaws as the tom relentlessly swims. He grasps onto her as well and manages to push Shadowkit onto the root; Tree, Leafstar, and Finleap take the kit to the bank. Tree asks Juniperclaw to help Violetshine too, and the tom splutters as he instructs her to climb over him. Violetshine is worried, but Tree tells her to do as he says, as she is carrying kits. He grows more urgent when he hears that she is pregnant, and Violetshine grips his shoulder; the ShadowClan tom fights to cling on. She manages to get closer to the bank, and Tree pulls her out of the water. Violetshine weakly says to save Juniperclaw. However, he tells them to say to Tigerstar that he is sorry and then releases; she is numb with shock as the water carries him away. On the other bank, Willowshine, Lionblaze, and a few others manage to pull Hootwhisker and Lizardtail back to the shore. Violetshine is vaguely aware of Tree and Twigbranch pressing themselves against her. Hawkwing then tells her to wake up, and Tree assures her that the other cats are alright. She gazes at Tree, and they touch muzzles. Shadowkit excitedly yowls that he followed his vision and brought the Clans together by drowning. Violetshine realizes that the kit might be right, and thinks that StarClan must have spoken to him. She looks up, and grows hopeful when she sees the clouds lighten and the rain stop.
