"But first I have news of Juniperclaw. Many of you will know that he is dead. But you may not know the whole story. Juniperclaw admitted to poisoning the SkyClan fresh-kill pile. He saw an easy way to drive SkyClan from the lake and he chose to go through with it, even though he knew he was breaking the warrior code. He believed he could protect his Clan best by saving us from fighting for our land. But a Clan that won't fight for their land when they have to is no Clan at all. And Juniperclaw paid dearly for his crime. He lost his deputyship and his life."

Chapter description[]

As Alderheart looks up at the stars glittering in the sky, he notes that the Gathering island was rather crowded tonight, when he sees Twigbranch, Violetshine, Hawkwing, Tree, and Finleap sitting not far away. Jayfeather also notes that it seems like every cat was at the Gathering after Tigerstar had called it to discuss SkyClan's arrival in his camp. Alderheart spots the leaders sitting together on the lowest branch as he recognizes that Juniperclaw is missing from his place on the roots with the other deputies. Beside him, he notices Puddleshine with a sense of warmth, noticing his thick pelt and freshly healed scars, free from injury.
Tigerstar starts off the Gathering by beginning to speak of change. He explains Juniperclaw's crimes and demise, and then announces Cloverfoot as the new deputy for ShadowClan. The Clans cheer, including Alderheart. As the cheers die down, Bramblestar comes forward and announces the return of SkyClan thanks to Twigbranch and her patrol, but is interrupted by an uproar of cheers from the gathered cats, and Strikestone and Lizardtail exclaim that land should be given equally, and that every Clan must help.
Harestar turns to Leafstar and apologizes, as the SkyClan leader glances reproachfully at the other leaders. Mistystar dips her head, saying that RiverClan wouldn't turn on SkyClan again, and as Leafstar turns to Tigerstar, the ShadowClan leader says that he has to stand up for what belongs to ShadowClan. Alderheart becomes nervous, afraid that the Gathering would descend into an argument until Bramblestar breaks it up and the other leaders ask how land will be divided. Harestar and Mistystar volunteer to shift their borders to help SkyClan adjust to their new territory.
Bramblestar turns to Tigerstar, asking of his opinion. Picking up on Tigerstar's hesitance, Alderheart turns to Puddleshine, but the latter simply tells the former to be quiet. The ShadowClan leader jokes that he can't think of anything better, as now they won't have to share a border with ThunderClan. Cats throw around jokes about ThunderClan missing ShadowClan's scent markers, while the leaders discuss how they will assist each other in building their camps.
Alderheart turns to spot Tree touching his muzzle to Violetshine's ear, and then seeing Twigbranch beside her sister, spotting Flypaw fit in between her and Finleap. He reminisces on how it had only been a few moons since Needletail and he had found them as lost kits, recalling how much they had grown and matured since then. Alderheart thinks about Needletail, wondering if she was proud of him, and thanks her for helping him find Twigbranch and Violetshine. The ThunderClan medicine cat prays that if any problem faces the Clans, they will face it as five Clans united.
