"I'm trying to give her time, but we just don't seem to connect. When I correct her or criticize her technique, she takes it personally, like I'm criticizing her. I feel like I can't tell her anything in case I upset her. I have to tiptoe around her like I'm stalking prey. Sometimes I wonder if I'm training her to be a warrior or she's training me to be a mouse."

Chapter description[]

Twigbranch is out hunting with Finleap. She remembers how she had tried to take Flypaw out at dawn, but the apprentice had been sleepy and moved even slower when Twigbranch criticized her, so Twigbranch had sent her back to camp. Twigbranch tells Finleap about the problems she's been having with her apprentice, and Finleap comforts her. Suddenly, Finleap smells a squirrel, and the two drop into a hunting crouch. They split up and flank the squirrel, who is busy nibbling on beech nuts. Finleap gives the signal and they both leap at the squirrel, but it escapes up a tree. Finleap climbs up after the squirrel and Twigbranch follows. The squirrel leaps onto the next tree, but Finleap leaps after it and hooks it with his claws.
Twigbranch slides down onto the ground and waits for Finleap to get down from his tree. When he lands, she compliments his catch, and Finleap purrs that they should bring it back to camp. At camp, Finleap drops his prey onto the fresh-kill pile, and Twigbranch hears angry voices from the medicine den. She noses her way through the entrance to see Jayfeather, Alderheart, and Leafpool arguing about feeding deathberries to Puddleshine. After Jayfeather and Leafpool leave the den, Twigbranch asks Alderheart if he's really going to do it, and he replies that of course he is.
Twigbranch leaves the den and decides that she has to talk to Flypaw. She hurries to the elders' den, where Jayfeather is examining Millie's ear, and asks them if they've seen Flypaw. Jayfeather mews that she's not here, and Millie suggests that she's collecting fresh bedding. Twigbranch leaves the den and begins heading for the camp entrance, but Finleap stops her, saying that he has important news. He tells her that Rosepetal and Blossomfall told him that Plumwillow told them that Reedclaw is sick. Twigbranch says that she's sorry before asking Molewhisker if he's seen Flypaw, to which he replies that he hasn't.
Finleap urgently tells Twigbranch to listen, and she reluctantly drags her attention back to him. He tells her that Reedclaw is his littermate and he needs to visit her. Twigbranch reminds him that he's a ThunderClan warrior now, and he has to stop worrying about his kin. Finleap says that he only joined ThunderClan to be with her, and when Twigbranch asks him if he's regretting it, he replies that he's not, but he thought they would be starting a family by now. He marches away, and Twigbranch feels a wave of shame as she realizes that she's not ready.
