Chapter description[]
- Twigbranch tells her apprentice to keep her muzzle down as Flypaw stalks a chaffinch. As she gives Flypaw instructions, the apprentice starts asking why they hunt birds. Twigbranch is annoyed, and carries on with explaining the instructions. Before she can finish, Flypaw explodes from behind a log and leaps for the chaffinch. Twigbranch watches as the bird flies away in a flurry of feathers, while Flypaw lands on the ground with a thump.
- The gray she-cat is furious and starts to argue with her apprentice for not listening to her instructions. Flypaw looks dejected, and Twigbranch begins to lecture her about her failure, and how she will fail the assessment if she carries on like this. When Flypaw asks if they are going to stalk another bird, Twigbranch says no and that they should head back to camp so Flypaw can practice hunting moves in the camp as a punishment. When they arrive, her apprentice apologizes for missing the chaffinch and races over to her mother, Cinderheart, who embraces Flypaw warmly. Twigbranch feels bitter that she doesn't have a mother to run to for comfort until Daisy's voice catches her attention. Her and Ivypool, who is washing Bristlekit, are talking about how Alderheart is planning to use deathberries to cure Puddleshine's illness, and if Tigerstar would be angry at Alderheart. Bristlekit interrupts, stating that all Tigerstars are murderers. Her mother dismisses this and sends her away to play with her siblings as Twigbranch comes over and joins the conversation.
- Ivypool tells her that Alderheart is staying in ShadowClan to take care of Puddleshine. Daisy chimes in, adding that the young medicine cat has been feeding Puddleshine deathberries. Twigbranch becomes nervous and asks what will happen to Alderheart if Puddleshine dies, but Ivypool doubts that the ShadowClan medicine cat will die. She hears Flipkit arguing with the other kits over a game, and when Twigbranch offers to keep them occupied, so Ivypool accepts and thanks her. Moonlight shines over the dark gray she-cat's nest as she lies in it. Twigbranch is exhausted from playing with the kits, and her paws ache. She begins to wonder where Finleap is, and figures that he will come back after he and Snappaw finish training. She'd saved him a shrew, and she looks over at his empty nest. Twigbranch starts to become nervous and and wonders why Finleap didn't invite her, and soon falls asleep. In the morning, birdsong wakes her, and when Twigbranch realizes that the nest next to her is still empty, she starts to panic.
