Chapter description

ThunderClan's apprentices rush outside the den as Whitewing screams about a dog attack. Looking through the rain, Lionpaw sees no signs of dogs, but many cats fill up the clearing, panicking and in horror. Ferncloud asks where they are, and Daisy remarks that it's like the badger attack. Whitewing reports to Firestar that the dogs were on WindClan territory, barking and causing cats to cry out, and Hollypaw insists that a patrol is sent to help. Leafpool inquires if there are injuries, but Whitewing denies this and comments that the dogs want blood, causing Jaypaw to ask Firestar if he believes him now, much to the leader's frustration. Firestar then decides to send a rescue party to WindClan, though some warriors are skeptical, and he questions Brightheart on the plan. The scarred she-cat agrees with it, despite the risk of the dogs following ThunderClan back to their camp; the Clan slowly begins to rally in support of WindClan.
Brambleclaw assigns Ashfur and Graystripe on the patrol, and after checking with Ashfur, chooses to take Lionpaw as well. Millie is also selected due to her expertise with the Twolegplace and dogs, and Berrypaw and Whitewing are then chosen. While Hollypaw wishes to join, Brambleclaw tells her to stay behind to help Brackenfur protect the camp, and Firestar is certain that Onestar will accept their help. Ferncloud walks up to Ashfur, and Lionpaw remembers how their mother was killed by Tigerstar, watching as they embrace each other warmly. The patrol quickly makes haste and dashes out of the camp, and with his imagination filling with snarling dogs, Lionpaw unsheathes his claws and glances around, finding it difficult to see in the rain. Hearing a panicked mew, Whitewing takes the lead, and Berrypaw and Lionpaw begin to pick up their paces. Suddenly, they find a black-and-white dog chasing Crowfeather and Heatherpaw, who are trying to take it away from the camp, and the patrol comes to a hard stop. Another dog follows two WindClan warriors, and Thornclaw and Dustpelt emerge, running at it and quickly confusing it due to the dog's inability to concentrate on multiple targets.
Brambleclaw decides to overwhelm the dogs, ordering Ashfur and Lionpaw to lead one of them to some boulders so it can be ambushed, but Ashfur insists on an open-land confrontation because of their agility, which the deputy only reluctantly allows. Brambleclaw tells him to take his apprentice and Birchfall, adding that they need to catch up to Crowfeather and Heatherpaw while he helps Nightcloud and Owlwhisker. Lionpaw and Ashfur hare after Crowfeather and Heatherpaw; the two keep running, sending moss flying as they swerve from to and fro in an attempt to evade the dog that is chasing them. Lionpaw keeps glancing at Heatherpaw as Ashfur yowls that they've come to help, but without warning, Heatherpaw stumbles over a rabbit hole and falls to the ground. Lionpaw immediately charges for the dog, with Birchfall and Ashfur behind him, and the apprentice claws at the dog's flank. He then crawls up onto its back, refusing to let go as Crowfeather and Ashfur violently attack. Lionpaw digs in harder, and finds Heatherpaw joining the fight, much to his dismay. She exclaims that she's helping him, scratching the dog's hind legs and causing it to roll on the golden tabby. Lionpaw jumps up, and sees Ashfur slashing at the dog, along with Crowfeather, Birchfall, and Heatherpaw. He then joins them, and together, they give the dog enough blows to send it fleeing.
Lionpaw almost gives chase, but he is called back by Ashfur. The other dog runs into the heather, leaving behind drops of blood, and Graystripe appears from out of the gorse with Millie, Tornear, and Harepaw. Brambleclaw then emerges from the bushes, wishing to see if WindClan is alright back at their camp, to which Crowfeather agrees. Lionpaw walks with Heatherpaw, and he asks if she is fine, proud of his battle scars protecting another Clan. The cats find themselves in an open clearing with tunnels leading to dens, and cats appear out of them apprehensively. A queen soothes Buzzardkit, and Onestar is pleased to hear of the dogs' defeat, learning that ThunderClan assisted in the fight. Brambleclaw apologizes for them crossing the borders, and Onestar reveals that Barkface knew the attack was going to happen from StarClan, making Lionpaw ponder about Jaypaw not being the only one to be foretold of it. Heatherpaw adds that Lionpaw rescued her, causing Crowfeather to remark that WindClan can protect themselves, irritating Lionpaw, though he is silenced by his mentor.
Breezepaw mews that no damage has happened to the border, but he is disappointed when Crowfeather asks if he checked thoroughly, causing the warrior to be chastised by his son and Nightcloud. Sedgekit inquires if Millie is the kittypet, earning her mistrustful stares, but the kit is called back inside by her mother. Brambleclaw says that ThunderClan should be going, and Breezepaw utters that they can defend themselves next time, causing him to be sharply scolded by Nightcloud, who is thankful that Lionpaw saved Heatherpaw. The latter asks Lionpaw if he needs herbs, though he declines, mentioning that Leafpool will treat any wounds when they return to camp. As they leave, Lionpaw thinks about what Jaypaw told Firestar earlier, wondering why the leader didn't take him seriously if he turned out to be right all along. However, Heatherpaw quickly takes over his thoughts, and the golden tabby only hears her sweet voice asking if he wants herbs.
