Chapter description[]
- Shadowsight is out herb hunting, recalling Bramblestar's impromptu Gathering. He doubts his decision to tell the other medicine cats about his codebreakers vision. He states that nothing had changed since the Gathering, that life in ShadowClan was still as normal as before. He realizes that he had only succeeded in endangering his mother and that Bramblestar seemed determined to punish the named codebreakers. Dovewing checks in on her son, reassuring him that he did the right thing. Shadowsight remains uncertain, telling her that their Clanmates believe he also made the wrong decision about the vision. She tells him that warriors will always have opinions and that the important thing was that he believed he did the right thing without lying. He feels reassured at his mother's words as they return to the medicine cat den.
- There, they find Pouncestep, Tawnypelt and Puddleshine. Tawnypelt tells Shadowsight and Dovewing that Pouncestep fell from a tree. Dovewing moves to comfort her kit while Shadowsight is relieved to find that his sister's injuries were not life-threatening. After he and Puddleshine settle the injured warrior, they talk. Shadowsight voices his worry that he thought accidents would stop after sharing his vision with the Clans. Puddleshine assures him that accidents happen any time and asks his apprentice if he had heard anything else from StarClan. Shadowsight replies no and his mentor points out that his visions had pushed the Clans deeper into conflict. This makes the young tom feel uneasy so he tells Puddleshine he is going for a walk.
- Shadowsight heads to the Moonpool for answers. The tom thinks over anything that he may have misinterpreted from StarClan as he walks there. Arriving at the Moonpool he is met with nothing but darkness as he recalls his mentor's words about conflict echo in his mind. The young medicine cat soon comes to the conclusion that the voice he had heard that told him to cure Bramblestar and shown him the codebreakers had not come from StarClan.
