"They obviously can’t see that well. It rushed straight past us. And I had enough time to get all the way across before it spotted me. I think we’ll be able to cross if we’re careful."

Chapter description[]

The cats walk along the riverbank, and Gray Wing sees large stretches of grass surrounded by bushes and strange shiny meshes. There are sheep watching them, and he and his companions are unsettled by them. Shaded Moss pauses, and states that they will go to the pointed stones, and Gray Wing thinks to himself that it is very far away. Jagged Peak says that they will never get there, and Shaded Moss encourages him. He is comforted by the sound of the river, and Cloud Spots and Dappled Pelt sniff at the herbs. He remembers the first time they had seen flocks of birds, and how it had felt so wrong to not catch the prey. Jackdaw's Cry says that the grass is soft and there are lots of creatures, but then adds that they may be watched. He answers that they are faster than most and can run away. However, they are now walking closer together and flinching at all the noises. The dark gray tom hears a rumble, and Jagged Peak asks what the smell is. Shaded Moss tells them to stay together.
Gray Wing and Clear Sky go to see what it is, and they are confused as to why the bushes are all in a straight line. Gray Wing sees huge creatures and their foul scent makes him struggle to breathe. He realizes that it must be the Thunderpath, and he crosses when the monsters leave. However, another one comes by, and Clear Sky drags him back. The pale gray tom tells him to keep watch, and he walks to a white line in the center of the path. They do not know what it is, and Clear Sky leaps back to safety as a monster goes by. Gray Wing is nervous, but his brother responds that they cannot see well, and they can cross if they're careful. He is not as confident, but Clear Sky says that they cannot give up. They go back to tell the others what they saw. Jackdaw's Cry is nervous, but Tall Shadow says that they do not seem to be very smart. Rainswept Flower meows that they can't seem to leave the Thunderpath, and once they cross, they will be safe. Shaded Moss tells them to cross in pairs, and Gray Wing and Clear Sky take Dappled Pelt and Rainswept Flower. They flinch when a monster comes, and the four cats are now worried. The two she-cats cross before another monster roars by. The other cats cross afterward, and the last few go together with Gray Wing.
Once they set off, Turtle Tail and Jackdaw's Cry are glad to be under the trees, but Gray Wing is uneasy. Shattered Ice agrees with him, and so does Quick Water. Moon Shadow tells them to stop behaving like kits, and there is plenty of prey. Shaded Moss tells him that they do not have time to hunt, and the black tom is annoyed. Clear Sky leaps up a tree, but says that it is not tall enough. Shaded Moss points out a tall oak, and Clear Sky and Tall Shadow climb up. Once they get down, he says that the trees end soon, but he and Tall Shadow do not say what they see beyond. Gray Wing wonders what they are keeping back, and the cats smell something strange. There is a volley of loud noises, and Shattered Ice exclaims that it is a dog. The cats scatter when they see the snarling animal. The dog is about to find Gray Wing but a tall, thin creature shouts. The Twoleg takes the dog away, and Falling Feather exclaims that it is the most terrible thing she has ever seen. They head back into the woods, but it begins to rain. Gray Wing is startled as he sees the Twoleg dens ahead, and there are strange scents in the air. Shattered Ice exclaims that it must be a Twolegplace, like how Misty Water had told him. The cats do not want to go near it, and Shaded Moss says that they must find shelter soon.
