Gray Wing is prevented from finding Jagged Peak because of a blizzard.
When he is able to leave, Gray Wing is given advice by the elders.
Gray Wing and Quiet Rain search for Jagged Peak until they come across a thinly iced waterfall and Quiet Rain tells Gray Wing she cannot go any farther.
Gray Wing runs across the ice and it breaks after he crosses.
After losing Jagged Peak's scent for a little while, Gray Wing finds him being attacked by an eagle.
They drive the eagle away, although Gray Wing is injured, and Gray Wing comforts Jagged Peak.
Gray Wing throws himself in front of the other cats and yowls that Shaded Moss was hurt.
Tall Shadow races across the Thunderpath and fetches Shaded Moss' body.
Cloud Spots confirms that Shaded Moss is dead.
Rainswept Flower, distraught, refuses to leave her father's body behind.
The group carries him across the Thunderpath and lays his body down on the other side.
They cover him with sticks and leaves while mewing their farewells to Shaded Moss.
The group continues along the sun trail and soon reach the end of the Twolegplace, where they settle down for the night in the copse.
The noise and chill of the wind wake the cats, and Tall Shadow suggests they continue.
They soon reach the top of Highstones and look out at the landscape below them.
They gain optimism and begin to make plans about where they could live in the land below.
Tall Shadow suggests they explore, and Jagged Peak attempts to run ahead, only to be reprimanded.
They suddenly hear the rumbling of a Thunderpath, and many of the cats balk at the thought of crossing, Shaded Moss's death still fresh in their minds.
Shattered Ice suggests they split into groups to cross and the others agree.
The first two groups make it across safely.
Gray Wing's group begin to cross, but halfway through, a monster approaches suddenly.
Everyone but Jagged Peak makes it across safely, and Clear Sky runs into the Thunderpath to save him, narrowly missing the monster.
Clear Sky snarls at Jagged Peak, and Gray Wing tries to tell Clear Sky that he should have realized Jagged Peak wasn't with him.
Quick Water intervenes, saying he could walk with her for a while.
Gray Wing, Clear Sky, and a few of the others are hunting in the forest.
They hear a screech, and Clear Sky recognizes it as Moon Shadow's.
They find him fighting with three other cats over a squirrel.
Clear Sky and Gray Wing rush in to defend Moon Shadow.
The three cats argue with the group over prey, and eventually run off, taking the squirrel with them.
Tall Shadow and her brother argue about hunting in the forest.
Tall Shadow agrees to let them hunt more in the forest, but only if they stuck together.
Moon Shadow and Clear Sky go hunting with a few of the others, but Gray Wing decides not to go with them.
Turtle Tail offers to go walking with him, and they go to the four oaks.
They climb up onto a rock and relax in the sun.
A voice suddenly calls up to them, and Gray Wing recognizes it as the she-cat that had been watching him and Clear Sky when they had come to the hollow.
They tell the she-cat, who introduces herself as Bumble, about the mountains and why they left.
After Bumble tells the pair about what she does as a kittypet, they laze in the sun until the mountain cats tell her they must go hunting.
As the two head back towards the moor, Turtle Tail scents a rabbit.
The two work together to catch it and eat before heading back to camp.
When they return, all of the cats gather and eat and Tall Shadow thanks Stoneteller for sending them to their new home.
A few days later, Gray Wing looks over at the four great oaks and thinks in amazement about all of the plants in their new home.
He begins running, just for fun, when he hears the squeal of a rabbit and sees Wind and Gorse chasing after it.
The rabbit runs down a hole, but, to Gray Wing's amazement, Wind dives in after it.
He walks up to Gorse and Wind pops out of the tunnel with the rabbit in her jaws.
Gray Wing asks if he could go down in the hole, and Wind tells him it was the rabbit's home, not hers.
He hesitates at the entrance, and Wind offers to go down with him.
As they work their way through a tunnel, Gray Wing panics, and Wind eventually shoves him out, calling him a mouse-brain.
He thanks Wind for showing him the tunnel, and they say their farewells.
Gray Wing, Turtle Tail, and Clear Sky watch the other cats battling the foxes.
Clear Sky charges towards the foxes, but Gray Wing stops him, saying they needed a plan.
They develop a plan, and attack the first fox.
The three of them send the first fox running and help the others fight off the rest.
At the end of the battle, no cat is seriously injured, but Gray Wing and Clear Sky agree that they had to practice their fighting, in case there was more trouble.
In the morning light, Gray Wing notices how much damage the battle caused.
He also sees Clear Sky and Moon Shadow pad up to Tall Shadow.
They announce that they wished to live in the forest.
Tall Shadow and Rainswept Flower argue with them, which pulls more cats into the argument.
It is decided that they would vote on whether to stay or go to the forest.
More cats decide to stay than to leave, and Tall Shadow tells them the matter was settled.
Clear Sky and Moon Shadow protest, saying they should be able to leave if they wanted to live in the forest.
Tall Shadow tells them to leave if they wished but that they were always welcome back.
Gray Wing creeps along the Thunderpath, searching for Bumble's nest.
The silver tabby he'd met previously comes up behind him and asks what he was doing there.
He asks for her name instead, and she tells him her name was Storm, and he tells her he was looking for Bumble's den.
Storm offers to take him to Bumble's den, and he follows her further on the Twolegplace.
She shows him to Bumble's fence and leaves him to investigate.
He calls for Turtle Tail, and she comes out of a cat flap with Bumble.
He tells her he came to rescue her, and she becomes angry, snapping she didn't need rescuing and was only sheltering for the night from the rain.
She apologizes to Bumble about Gray Wing's behavior and stalks off through the fence, Gray Wing close behind.
After walking for a bit, Gray Wing apologizes, saying he had been worried about her.
She forgives him and tells him about the den, but trails off, noticing he wasn't interested.
Two days later, Gray Wing is in the trees and hears yowling.
He races towards it and discovers a white cat and a yellow tabby had Storm trapped in some oak roots.
He rushes in and tackles the white tom, fighting him off until the two leave.
Storm tells him she could've handled it, and asks if she could see where his friends had been living.
He agrees and takes her to the camp.
Turtle Tail comes into camp while Gray Wing is showing Storm around.
She introduces herself to Storm and fiercely tells Gray Wing she wasn't going to the Twolegplace before stalking off.
He lets Turtle Tail go and asks Storm if she would show him around the woods the next day.
She agrees and trots away.
Rainswept Flower teases him about falling for a rogue, and he denies it, even though the idea of her moving to the moor keeps creeping into his thoughts.
Gray Wing arrives at the four trees, on a gloomy day with no sun peeking through the clouds.
Turtle Tail finds him there and asks if he wants to hunt with her, but he says no because he's waiting for Storm.
The she-cat leaves and Gray Wing looks for Storm.
Tall Shadow comes and asks Gray Wing to talk to her.
She questions what the new cats living with Clear Sky are like, and he replies that he's already told her all he knows.
Tall Shadow then asks if they should invite Gorse and Wind to live in the hollow with the mountain cats, but Gray Wing is hesitant, saying it's hard to let strangers in.
A few days later, he sees Wind and Gorse.
They ask if they can visit the hollow again, but Gray Wing refuses with his and Tall Shadow's conversation still in mind.
He walks along and finds Storm, and the two cats take a walk alongside the river.
Gray Wing meows that he wants to meet her again, but as he brushes his muzzle against her she pulls away, saying goodbye.
Gray Wing collects his moss and brings it back to the hollow.
He questions Turtle Tail if she's been visiting Bumble again, and the she-cat gets defensive and says he might feel differently if she had silver fur.
She leaves, and Shattered Ice says he has the sense of a rabbit. When Gray Wing asks why he gets no response.
The next day, Turtle Tail asks Gray Wing to come talk with her outside the hollow.
She reveals that she has chosen to go live with Bumble.
Gray Wing promises to let the others know where she's gone, and she then leaves.
Later, Gray Wing finds Storm in the forest.
Storm tells him that she's going to live with Clear Sky, and Gray Wing feels crushed.
He somberly thinks that maybe he owes his brother this, as it was his fault Bright Stream died and now Storm could make Clear Sky happy.
Gray Wing goes on a hunt with Rainswept Flower, and they both comment on the colors of the trees.
Jackdaw's Cry arrives and tells the pair that he wasn't allowed to visit his sister, Falling Feather.
Gray Wing thinks that it's just a misunderstanding, as Clear Sky would never stop cats from visiting.
He gets stopped by Fox, Petal, and a white tom. They tell him to get off Clear Sky's land.
Storm comes, and she says that Gray Wing can visit as often as he likes since he's Clear Sky's brother.
She leads him to camp, then Clear Sky orders her to her nest for the well-being of their kits.
Gray Wing asks why Jackdaw's Cry wasn't allowed to come see Falling Feather, and Clear Sky replies that Fox and Frost can be a bit harsh guarding boundaries, but it keeps cats safe.
Falling Feather and Moon Shadow race into the clearing and yowl that Jagged Peak has fallen out of a tree while hunting.
Gray Wing runs to fetch Dappled Pelt, and when she arrives she tends to Jagged Peak.
Dappled Pelt agrees to stay and care for Jagged Peak at Clear Sky's request.
Gray Wing returns to camp with a rabbit and spots two cats approaching from the forest.
The two cats turn out to be Frost and Jagged Peak, and Frost dumps Jagged Peak on the ground and leaves.
Jagged Peak explains that Clear Sky kicked him out because he couldn't hunt, so Gray Wing takes him back to the hollow.
The moor cats accept Jagged Peak into their home, and he is welcomed to stay.
Gray Wing goes to the forest to talk to Clear Sky about Jagged Peak.
Clear Sky says that he must do what is best for the group, and couldn't have Jagged Peak be a deadweight.
Gray Wing attacks him, but Clear Sky overpowers his brother and tells him to leave.
Shocked, Gray Wing stumbles through the forest and sees Storm.
He asks her what she thinks about Clear Sky's actions, and she becomes uneasy, saying that her mate thinks he's doing the right thing.
Gray Wing returns to the hollow, and reports what Clear Sky said to Tall Shadow.
She shakes her head and notes that the tom wasn't the same anymore.
Gray Wing visits Jagged Peak and sees Cloud Spots giving him exercises to build his strength.
He later goes hunting, and ventures into the forest in pursuit of a squirrel.
Fox attacks him, calling him a prey-stealer. Gray Wing protests.
Clear Sky and Storm enter the clearing, while Fox batters Gray Wing.
Gray Wing panics and throws off Fox, and accidentally kills him.
Clear Sky meows to Gray Wing that he has no brother anymore, and orders the tom to leave.
Gray Wing turns to leave, unbelieving, until Storm speaks up.
The she-cat says she's going to go live in the Twolegplace, saying she can't bear the way Clear Sky treats cats. She says harshly that Fox would be alive if he wasn't throwing his weight around.
Storm turns to Gray Wing and apologizes to him, then leaves the clearing with a sorrowful glance at Clear Sky.
Gray Wing has a restless night and keeps feeling uneasy with thoughts of Storm in his mind.
He makes up his mind to go look for Storm and catches a rabbit to give to her when he reaches her den.
Gray Wing sees none of Clear Sky's cats as he travels through the forest, but as he nears the Twolegplace, he sees Turtle Tail.
He asks her what's wrong, and she replies that Storm's den is under attack.
Gray Wing follows Turtle Tail and sees a Twoleg monster looking over Storm's den. He calls for Storm, then when he gets no response, says he's going in.
Turtle Tail protests, but he enters and locks gazes with Storm for a second before a yellow monster takes a bite out of the wall.
Gray Wing leaps over to Storm and clears rubble off her, and beside her in the wreckage are three limp bodies of the kits she'd tried to protect.
Storm awakens and says all she wanted to do was keep her kits safe. She tells Gray Wing to tell Clear Sky she's sorry.
Gray Wing finds that one of her kits is still alive, and he brings the tiny cat out of the den.
Gray Wing and Turtle Tail run away from the den, and he tells her that Storm is dead.
They take the kit back to the forest, and name him Thunder, since he was born of Storm.
Gray Wing and Turtle Tail meet some forest cats, who although hostile, escort Gray Wing to their camp.
Gray Wing explains what has happened to Storm, and presents Thunder to him as his son.
Clear Sky says to Gray Wing to take him away, and Gray Wing states that this is truly the end of their brotherhood because he's abandoning his family.
They leave the forest, and once in the hollow, Tall Shadow asks who Thunder is.
Gray Wing explains the situation, and after some debate, the kit is allowed to stay.
He nuzzles Thunder and says to the kit that from now on he will be his father.
Fox and Petal are fighting against a badger, and their mother dies protecting them.
They are kits, and Petal frets about what they will do now. Fox insists that they'll survive.
She wished her mother well wherever she rests and knows there's no one to care for them.
They smell two cats, who think they might share their prey.
The hungry kits approach the two cats and ask to share some food.
One she-cat unsheathes her claws and tells them to look elsewhere.
They know what will happen if they don't stop bothering her, and note that the other cats with her look unsympathetic as well.
Together, Petal and Fox end up catching a squirrel, but a gray-and white-she-cat leaps down, hissing that all the prey in the area is theirs.
Petal realizes that the cats don't care if they're kits - they'd leave them to die regardless.
She knows they are on their own, and tells Fox to find somewhere else to hunt.
Fox asks why they were so mean, and Petal snaps that it doesn't matter, but they had learned a lesson today - that it was just the two of them.
Petal walks deeper into the forest with her brother, thinking that she doesn't care if she never sees another cat again.
They are able to track down two mice and share it among themselves.
Petal tries to catch a robin, but it is startled by yowling from the forest cats.
Petal thinks she knows them, and Fox reminds them that they were the cats who had turned them away before.
A gray tom turns to see them, and the two siblings instantly run, knowing the forest cats aren’t nice.
They attempt to run away from them, but the gray tom calls them back, stating that he won’t hurt them.
Petal disbelieves that. She notices that Fox is trying to cross the river in a desperate attempt to escape, and calls him back, thinking that it is too dangerous.
Petal and Fox try to go back to the tom and his companions, but they are still on the stepping stones.
Petal accidentally falls from one, and almost drowns, but the gray tom saves her life. He introduces himself as Clear Sky.
He instructs his companions to keep the half-drowned cat warm, and Petal notices that the cats are actually very kind, sharing their prey with each other and comforting one another.
Clear Sky asks if she wants to join, and Petal queries if she and Fox can meet the others.
She thinks that she will work on her hunting and fighting skills, and in the future, no cat will be able to push her around.
