Chapter description[]
- Tigerclaw wait outside the tunnel that leads to the Moonstone, Runningnose following him. He thinks about how he became ShadowClan's leader, and he is now "on the brink of everything he had wished for".
- Runningnose tells him the moon is rising, and Tigerclaw responds back that StarClan would wait for him. He silently questions the medicine cat's loyalty. Runningnose responds that StarClan might wait, but dawn would not. Tigerclaw flashes his claws and then walks into the tunnel. Runningnose follows him, with raspy breaths. Tigerclaw wonders why anyone would trust a medicine cat who couldn't even cure his own cold.
- He reaches the Moonstone, and feels Runningnose's breath on his flanks. Runningnose tells him to lie down and touch the stone with his nose. Tigerclaw thinks that he knows what to do. He rests his muzzle against the Moonstone. Moonlight hits it and turns it a dazzling white. Tigerclaw's heart leaps as he thinks StarClan is here!
- Runningnose tells him to not be alarmed if StarClan doesn't come to him. He goes on and says that when he brought Nightpelt here, things were not as they had expected, and that StarClan did not approve because Brokenstar was still alive. Tigerclaw responds saying that Brokenstar was dead, and asks if StarClan would deny the wishes of their Clanmates. Runningnose replies back that StarClan knew their destiny better than any of them. Tigerclaw thinks that that destiny was his leadership. He closes his eyes and then opens them.
- He gasps and exclaims that he is in ShadowClan. A dark gray tom says that it was their version of ShadowClan. He introduces himself as Cedarstar, and welcomes him. Tigerclaw releases his breath and asks if there are others. Cedarstar gestures with his tail and more StarClan cats appear.
- A small ginger she-cat, Littlebird, comes forward. Tigerclaw flinches when he realizes he cannot feel her breath on his nose. Littlebird says that she died without being able to save her Clan from Brokenstar, and that her Clan can be strong again. Tigerclaw responds that he will lead her Clan to greater victory than it has ever known. Littlebird says that victory isn't everything and that sometimes peace brings greater rewards. Tigerclaw thinks that once he is leader, he will use Littlebird's former Clan to seek revenge on every cat who has wronged him. Littlebird then gives him a life for compassion. Tigerclaw's mind whirls with images of cats in pain, cats filled with joy, and cats wailing in terror or hissing with fury. He staggers. Littlebird tells him to be strong. Tigerclaw thanks her.
- Another cat who was not much bigger than a newborn kit comes out from the ferns behind Littlebird. He says he is Badgerfang, and Tigerclaw snorts and says he is the smallest warrior he has ever seen. Badgerfang's eyes flash with anger and says that he died as Badgerpaw when he was four moons old, and that Brokenstar forced him and his littermates to fight before they should have even become apprentices. He says his mentor Flintfang said he could choose his warrior name.
- Tigerclaw nods and asks what life Badgerfang can give him. Badgerfang blinks and tells him to be patient. He gives Tigerclaw a life for training young cats wisely. Tigerclaw feels a rush of warmth. He vows in his head that he will train his young Clanmates and that they will belong to the most powerful Clan in the forest. Badgerfang trots away.
