"I've gone back to being a medicine cat. Or I will go back. Maybe. Just as I was beginning to find my way as a warrior apprentice, StarClan started sharing visions with me. Real ones. I think Curlfeather was right all along. I think I am destined to be a medicine cat. I guess we'll find out at the end of this journey." |

Chapter description[]
- Nightheart awakens to find himself bedded in leaves and feeling weak. He remembers Frostpaw, reflecting on her distrusting behavior toward him, and he calls for her, waking her up. Frostpaw explains how she treated his wounded leg and they acknowledge that they saved one another. When he expresses gratitude for her being a medicine cat apprentice, she says that she no longer is, reminding Nightheart of Sunbeam and ThunderClan, and he feels guilty for leaving. They begin to discuss their Clanmates, and Nightheart asks Frostpaw if a RiverClan cat attacked her, a question she avoids. He moves the conversation to her battle skills, and Frostpaw tells him about how Curlfeather had wanted her to be a medicine cat. Nightheart relates to her through his experience with Sparkpelt's expectations, and as he feels that Frostpaw is beginning to soften, he confides in her about his prior discomfort with ThunderClan. In response, Frostpaw suggests that she may become a medicine cat again. She leaves him to rest while she hunts.
- The pair leave at sunhigh and Frostpaw explains Riverstar's instructions to Nightheart as they follow a Thunderpath. Soon after, Frostpaw spots the three stripes, and Nightheart reluctantly joins her in walking along the third white line. Nightheart soon sees a bony monster racing toward them, carrying a Twoleg, and he pushes Frostpaw off the Thunderpath as more of them pass by. The two cats flee onto a fence and into the meadows of Twoleg dens, and Frostpaw sees that Nightheart's wound is bleeding, though he dismisses it. As they cross a wide meadow, Twoleg kits rush from the den to chase them and the cats flee, only to be found and pursued by a dog. They jump another fence as the dog tries to break through, and Nightheart accidentally runs onto soft blue ice covering a pond, which folds over him, pulling him into the water. Frostpaw manages to help him escape and guides him to the next fence. After Frostpaw checks on him, they find the Thunderpath again and begin to follow it, with Nightheart feeling severe pain in his leg and fearing that he is a burden to Frostpaw.
