- Sunbeam thinks that she is growing accustomed to hunting with ThunderClan as she eats a squirrel, though she deeply misses Nightheart. The Clan awaits the return of Brambleclaw, Squirrelstar, and Ivypool from their meeting with Tree and Tigerstar. They return at twilight, and Squirrelstar reports that Tigerstar has refused to take his warriors out of RiverClan but has assured that it is temporary. As the Clan discusses this, Ivypool and Squirrelstar note that Splashtail had represented RiverClan at the meeting and wants everything resolved before Havenpelt has her kits. ThunderClan expresses doubt that Tigerstar will give in, but Squirrelstar says that they can only continue to negotiate. Finchlight and Sparkpelt ask if Sunbeam has any ideas on how to handle Tigerstar, and she suggests speaking to Tigerstar's mate, Dovewing.
- Ivypool agrees to meet with her sister and takes Sunbeam with her to the border, where they are met by Dovewing and Sparrowtail, which makes Sunbeam anxious. Ivypool asks to speak with Dovewing about RiverClan, which agitates her, and Dovewing defends Tigerstar's actions before ultimately refusing to provide them with information or speak with Tigerstar. When Sparrowtail suggests to Dovewing that they leave, Sunbeam asks him to stay, and Ivypool persuades Dovewing to speak with her alone. Sunbeam apologizes to Sparrowtail for leaving, citing her love for Nightheart and insisting that she is happy, trying to avoid a repeat of Berryheart's lectures. Sparrowtail mentions a plan that Berryheart has come up with, but does not elaborate, and Ivypool and Dovewing return, seeming close again. They say their goodbyes and part ways, and Ivypool says that Dovewing's mind had not changed, but Sunbeam is worried about Berryheart's plan.
