Chapter description[]
- After a few days of traveling, Frostpaw and Nightheart reach a river after leaving the Thunderpath behind, but the current is too strong for Nightheart to cross due to the rain. Nightheart points out a bridge and they rush to it, only to find that it had been broken in the middle, and Nightheart begins to doubt that they are heading the right way, to Frostpaw's irritation. She insists that they are on the right track, relieving his anxiety. They search through the day for a way across the river, but find nothing, and Frostpaw grows agitated with StarClan again for making her path difficult. Nightheart reassures her that Riverstar would not give her an impossible task.
- As the sun sets, they hunt a few mice and settle down to rest, and Frostpaw tends to Nightheart's injury. She again worries over Riverstar's lack of guidance and suggests that perhaps he has chosen a better cat, but Nightheart believes that Riverstar will not abandon her. Frostpaw falls asleep and is greeted by Riverstar in another dream, and he offers encouragement and tells her to search for a salmon-colored tree beyond the river, where she will find cats who will aid her. She awakens and heads to the river, soon followed by Nightheart, and she spots a green kingfisher swooping into the water to catch a minnow. Frostpaw takes this as a sign and tells Nightheart that there is a way to cross.
