- Nightheart sees the kingfisher and asks if they should hunt, but Frostpaw simply heads downstream. He notes how well his injury has healed and wonders why StarClan had chosen him to help Frostpaw, but feels determined. Watching the kingfisher fly gives Nightheart the idea to use two tall elm trees to cross, as their branches reach over the river close to one another. They check the elm on their side as Frostpaw excitedly recounts her dream before she begins climbing, and Nightheart is comforted by her hope. He leads her to their targeted branch and begins to creep along it, before noticing that Frostpaw has halted, frightened. He tries to comfort her, but Frostpaw admits that she is remembering Curlfeather's death. Nightheart reassures her, promising to keep her safe and encouraging her, and Frostpaw finally follows him cautiously.
- When they reach the end of the branch, Nightheart advises her on what to do. He leaps first, reaching the other branch with ease and turning to face Frostpaw. He admires her courage as she prepares herself until she finally leaps, managing to reach Nightheart and expressing delight at their success. Frostpaw becomes fearful again, however, as they start to climb down the tree, feeling that there are dogs. Nightheart tells her to scent the air and promises there are no dogs, and she shakes off her fear so they can move on. By sunset, they have traveled through a Twolegplace and reached a tall fence formed by black branches, and they squeeze through, hoping to find prey. They cross a large meadow to a pond, where they find the salmon-colored tree, along with cats beneath it. Nightheart is wary of them, but Frostpaw tells him that this is what they had been looking for.
