"I've had enough of your insolence, Berryheart. I've seen you whispering, trying to influence your Clanmates. Your poison has tainted ShadowClan. It's soured our relationships with the other Clans and made my task of keeping our Clan safe even harder. I'm sick of having to tell you again and again that I have no intention of taking over RiverClan. I shouldn't have to keep explaining my motives. Especially to you. You're an experienced warrior. You've known me since I was born! You're my Clanmate, for StarClan's sake!" |

Chapter description[]
- At the Gathering, Sunbeam feels excited that she will be announced as a new member of ThunderClan, confident she has made the right choice. As the Clans settle in, Sunbeam notices ShadowClan standing apart and realizes that they all seem anxious. While Harestar begins reporting his news, Sunbeam and her friends briefly discuss RiverClan's situation, and she finds herself wishing that ThunderClan were more understanding toward Tigerstar. Just as Squirrelstar is about to report, Duskfur disrupts her to announce that RiverClan had held a vigil for Frostpaw and accepted her death. Once the Clans offer their condolences, Squirrelstar reports that Sunbeam is now a full ThunderClan warrior, and the news is met with congratulations from all except Berryheart, who immediately confronts her daughter, to Sunbeam's dismay.
- Berryheart accuses Sunbeam of betrayal and warns that ThunderClan will not accept her, and while Sunbeam's friends protest, Berryheart's group encourages her to return to ShadowClan. Sparkpelt, Finchlight, and Bayshine push Sunbeam to defend herself, and after some hesitation, Sunbeam declares her newfound loyalty to ThunderClan, as well as her sense of belonging there and her pride in being one of their warriors. Her words are greeted with warm praise and joy from her new Clanmates. Berryheart and her group approach the Great Oak and she demands that Tigerstar step down from leadership, accusing Tigerstar of wanting to control RiverClan out of greed. Tigerstar argues that he is tired of Berryheart turning his Clan against him and arguing against his actions. She says that their Clanmates support her, though they all seem uneasy, and she names Puddleshine as a supporter. When a few cats point out that she needs both medicine cats' support, Berryheart says that Shadowsight does not count as Tigerstar's son.
- When Berryheart tells Cloverfoot to get her nine lives, Puddleshine makes himself heard, revealing that he only supported her to show a critical flaw in the new rule for deposing leaders: any cat can use it for petty reasons, which can cause problems within a Clan. ShadowClan seems happy that they no longer must support Berryheart, with Dovewing telling her to go to ThunderClan with Sunbeam if she is unhappy. Berryheart growls that she would rather become a rogue, and Tigerstar indicates that perhaps she should, asking her followers if they would also like to be rogues. They back off, and Tigerstar exiles Berryheart, who is supported by Sparrowtail and Hollowspring, while Spireclaw refuses to join her. Berryheart turns to Sunbeam, pointing out Nightheart's absence, but Sunbeam reinforces her love for him and loyalty to ThunderClan. With that, Berryheart and her kin depart, and the leaders prepare to end the Gathering until Duskfur says that she has an announcement to make.
