Chapter description[]
- Sunbeam returns to ThunderClan camp with her hunting patrol, reflecting on being there alone without Nightheart. She hesitates, wondering who to sit with to eat, looking around at several cats. Finally, Myrtlebloom invites Sunbeam to sit with her, praising her hunting skills. Sunbeam then sees Finchlight and Sparkpelt watching her and talking, before they approach her with a mouse. Despite her wariness, Sunbeam offers to share it with Finchlight, and the group continue to discuss Sunbeam's experience with hunting ThunderClan prey. Sparkpelt expresses pride in Nightheart for being chosen to go to the Moonpool, and Sunbeam tells her how well he had done in his trials for ShadowClan, silently remembering how he had failed his third trial for her.
- Suddenly, Berryheart rushes into camp, calling for her daughter. Flipclaw and Sorrelstripe follow her, explaining to Ivypool that they had been unable to stop her. As Berryheart confronts Sunbeam, she tries to get her to leave the camp to talk, but she refuses and admonishes her for betraying ShadowClan. Sunbeam insists that she left because she loves Nightheart, but Berryheart is disbelieving, questioning how she can trust him. She begs Sunbeam to return home and take a ShadowClan mate instead, but Sunbeam stands firm and declares her loyalty to ThunderClan, earning her new Clanmates' approval. Berryheart notices Nightheart's absence, asking if Sunbeam is certain Nightheart had even wanted her to follow him, briefly causing Sunbeam to doubt herself.
- However, Sparkpelt and Finchlight defend Sunbeam, angering Berryheart into insulting their Clan. This prompts Ivypool to step in and send Berryheart away, and Berryheart says that she will be awaiting Sunbeam's return before leaving. Sunbeam feels anxious, wishing Nightheart had been there with her, until Sparkpelt and Finchlight reassure her. She thanks them and apologizes to Ivypool, feeling guilty for doing so and for turning Berryheart away, wondering if her mother is right. Ivypool sends her to gather comfrey with Myrtlebloom, though Sunbeam worries that she will find the wrong leaves and get scolded by Jayfeather. She doubts her place in ThunderClan, wondering if she truly belongs there without Nightheart.
