"I know it must seem unfair. I think she was making up for being so hard on me over my warrior assessments. Perhaps she was right to be that hard. I made a lot of mistakes. But I think Squirrelflight wants to give me a chance now to prove myself. That's why she chose me. I know I've got a lot to make up for. I promise I'll do my best." |

Chapter description[]
- Alderheart prods Nightheart awake, and Nightheart apologizes for falling asleep. Squirrelflight laments that clouds had covered the moon, so they were unable to speak with StarClan. As they head back to camp, it begins to rain. Nightheart worries that StarClan does not approve of Squirrelflight becoming leader. The black tom wonders if Bramblestar is thinking the same based off his somber body language. As they cross a bracken-covered slope, Bramblestar comments that they just crossed the SkyClan border. Squirrelflight disagrees, insisting she's leading them towards the Sky Oak, but the pair begin to argue. Alderheart silences them as a SkyClan patrol arrives with Rootspring in the lead. The SkyClan tom asks why they are in SkyClan territory, and Squirrelflight apologizes due to the rain covering the scent marks. Rootspring then prods why they are so far from their own camp, and Alderheart lies that they were seeking guidance from StarClan about Nightheart and Sunbeam returning to ThunderClan. Nightheart reveals that they are allowed to stay, and Rootspring seems satisfied with his answer. Needleclaw and Cloudmist ask about the tensions between RiverClan and ShadowClan, especially with Leafstar keen to free RiverClan from Tigerstar's grasp. Nightheart suggests asking Tree to mediate, and Rootspring promises to inform Leafstar about his idea.
- After the SkyClan cats leave, Squirrelflight tells Nightheart to return to camp while they try again at the Moonpool. Eager to reunite with Sunbeam, Nightheart hurries back to camp, and he is intercepted by Dewnose and Plumstone asking about Bramblestar and Squirrelflight. Nightheart explains that they're still at the Moonpool waiting for the storms to pass. Dewnose and Plumstone irritably question Nightheart's loyalty to ThunderClan and to Squirrelflight since he abandoned the Clan once already. Nightheart is determined to prove himself to his Clanmates, and the two warriors let him pass. Back in camp, Nightheart informs his Clanmates with what happened at the Moonpool. While the other warriors dwell on this news, Nightheart happily reunites with Sunbeam. Sunbeam explains how Myrtlebloom, Sparkpelt, and Finchlight were kind to her while he was away. His mother and sister praise Sunbeam's hunting skills to Nightheart. Sparkpelt asks Nightheart if he saw Frostpaw while he was out since Owlnose and Splashtail had stopped by at dawn to search for her. Ivypool, the future deputy, approaches Sunbeam to ask if she's ready for her first trial to officially become a member of ThunderClan.
