"If this journey stopped a war, Sunbeam wouldn't have to choose between ThunderClan and ShadowClan. And if he went with Frostpaw and helped save the Clans, no one would ever think of him as just Firestar's kin." |

Chapter description[]
- Left to his own thoughts while guarding Alderheart, Squirrelflight, and Bramblestar who are currently in the Moonpool, Nightheart wonders how Sunbeam's first trial had gone, as when he had left, she had been making good progress as the kits had caught two voles. Upon smelling the scent of a RiverClan cat, Nightheart follows it, remembering that Sparkpelt had asked him earlier in camp that day if he had seen a missing RiverClan cat by the name of Frostpaw.
- Pushing through bushes, Nightheart sees a body that is barely moving. Heart thumping, he calls out Frostpaw's name. The young she-cat turns her head, causing Nightheart to back up. The pair have a conversation about who Nightheart is and his history switching between ThunderClan and ShadowClan as well as the reason Bramblestar and Squirrelflight are at the Moonpool. The topic of the conversation switches to Frostpaw's injuries, which Nightheart learns is because of some cat had attempted to murder the apprentice. The ThunderClan warrior offers to fetch Alderheart, who he states is also at the Moonpool, but apologizes as Frostpaw yowls at him that no cat can know she's alive, since she doesn't know who had wanted her dead.
- Nightheart looks over Frostpaw, wondering if she had already been treated. The she-cat replies that a Twoleg healer had seen her, so Nightheart offers to escort her back to RiverClan. Frostpaw rejects the idea as she voices her suspicion that one of her fellow Clanmates had tried to kill her. She continues, explaining that her Clan is in danger, that Curlfeather, Mistystar, and Reedwhisker's deaths weren't coincidental, and that her Clan needs her.
- Nightheart asks if she needs to do it on her own, causing Frostpaw to explain that she had had a vision from StarClan telling her to go on a journey and that they would send her help. She tells the ThunderClan warrior that she believes that the help StarClan sent is him. Nightheart exclaims in disbelief that he isn't the help StarClan sent as he can't leave his Clan and his mate behind. Frostpaw, not appearing too disappointed, states that she didn't expect Nightheart to be the help either, since the cat who StarClan sent must be a really great warrior, and he/she would become really famous among the Clans. Upon hearing this, Nightheart gets excited as he sees an opportunity to finally leave make a name for himself instead of living under Firestar's shadow.
- Frostpaw tells him that they are leaving right now, causing Nightheart to want to inform the ThunderClan trio at the Moonpool of his departure. However, he realizes that he cannot interrupt them, and he decides to go on a journey with Frostpaw without informing his Clan.
