Chapter description[]

Gray Wing watches Thunder and River Ripple talk together. His hind paws hurt more than anything, and it takes all his courage not to show the pain he feels, nor his breathing problem to his denmates. He resents that Thunder took the lead to save his denmates and recalls that they had wanted him to be their leader. Gray Wing feels like he let them down, because he led them to be trapped in the fire.
Tall Shadow introduces herself to River Ripple, and she asks him if he knows how to get them out of here. River Ripple steps into the stream, his paws barely covered by water. Thunder exclaims that he is walking on water, but the rogue explains that it is just the pebbles under the surface. Gray Wing tells the group that he can't go into the river yet because he had led them to danger. The silver tom asks Gray Wing if he thinks Clear Sky can't look after himself, but Gray Wing admits that his brother is good at surviving, which leaves him to ask himself if he recklessly led the group into danger. River Ripple formulates a plan, telling the cats to get to safety before helping Clear Sky and his group.
When the cats make it safely to the other side of the river, they thank River Ripple for saving their lives. Gray Wing suddenly remembers that his brother is still near the fire, and he begins yowling his brother's name. With a breath of relief, Gray Wing hears an answering call on the other side of the river. Gray Wing nears towards the water's edge and sees glimpses of his brother's gray fur, calling out to his brother to swim. Clear Sky and his cats make it safely across the river.
Gray Wing sees Thunder looking up at Clear Sky with wide eyes, and he urges him to come closer. Gray Wing tells his brother that Thunder saved his life, in which Thunder receives a compliment from his father. Thunder then asks about his mother, and Clear Sky answers his son's question. Tall Shadow invites River Ripple to come with them back to the hollow, but he respectfully declines, saying that he is a rogue and bounds off. Gray Wing sighs in relief, thinking that the nightmare is finally over.
