Below contains in-depth information for chapter fourteen of Thunder Rising. If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
Gray Wing sees Thunder and Clear Sky walking together down into the hollow, uneasy of the sudden relationship between them. He watches as the two groups stay separate, and Gray Wing thinks the fire should have brought the two groups together. Gray Wing walks up to Tall Shadow, who sits beside her brother. Tall Shadow says she needs to take care of Moon Shadow now and asks Gray Wing to take over her place as leader. Gray Wing asks her if she is sure, but Tall Shadow argues that she feels like she is losing her leadership. Gray Wing asks himself how he can refuse, and wonders if Stoneteller was telling him to accept the leadership.
He sees Clear Sky on the top of the hollow and decides to go talk to him. He drags himself up the slope and sees Thunder padding up the slope to Clear Sky and he crouches down to watch. Clear Sky begins praising Thunder for his lead during the fire, then whips around to Jagged Peak and scornfully asks what he has done to prove himself. Jagged Peak explains that he has been in camp watching over the cats, and walks away from him, angry that Clear Sky thinks he is a waste of space. Gray Wing confronts Clear Sky, defending Jagged Peak. He also tells him to relax, since they have made the journey from the mountains, but Clear Sky states that they have to be ready.
Clear Sky turns to his son and invites Thunder to come live with him, despite Gray Wing's protests. Thunder asks his father if it is true that they do not know what tomorrow brings, and Clear Sky replies that it is, and asks about the skirmish about the dogs. Thunder admits that it was scary, but he survived. Clear Sky tells him that he is clearly a survivor, stating that the stronger cats by his side, the safer they all will be. Thunder asks his father why he wants him now, even after he rejected him as a kit. Clear Sky explains to his son that he wanted to see if Thunder could survive without him. He states that it is time for them to be together since he passed the test. Gray Wing knows that Thunder will be leaving soon, and he knows all he can do is prepare him.
