Chapter description[]
- Tall Shadow calls all the cats together around her rock and reminds them of the fire the previous night. She adds that she must take care of her brother now and chooses Gray Wing to take over her place as leader. Many cats congratulate Gray Wing for his new position in the group, including Clear Sky, who also states that he and his cats are leaving the moor to return home. Gray Wing asks if they must leave so soon, but Clear Sky replies that the forest is their home. Gray Wing expresses his feelings to his brother, telling him that he hopes to see him more often. Clear Sky replies that he doubts that will happen, saying that he must prepare for the future.
- The light gray tom mockingly accuses his brother of not being organized, telling him that he does not know who is leading the camp these days, mentioning Wind and Tall Shadow. Gray Wing is shocked by his brother's cruel words and calmly tells his brother that Wind and Gorse have been welcoming, but Clear Sky scornfully states that those two rogues would take up all their prey. He dismisses the conversation by informing Gray Wing that Thunder is coming with him. He tells his brother that he only left the ginger tom to test him and challenges Gray Wing if he interferes with their relationship. When Gray Wing does not reply, Clear Sky walks away, satisfied.
- Gray Wing watches Lightning Tail and Thunder stalk a pebble and interrupts their game by telling Lightning Tail that he needs to talk to Thunder alone. He tells Thunder that Clear Sky and his cats are leaving soon and asks Thunder to say a proper farewell to Hawk Swoop, after all she has done for him. After Thunder does Gray Wing's request, he gives one regretful glance at the dark gray tom before bounding after his father.
