"Things aren't quite as happy as they appear... True, the cats are well fed and cared for, but things have changed. It's many moons since we laid eyes on Clear Sky, but when we've met his cats, they've made it quite clear that the forest is theirs now."

Chapter description[]

Upon returning to camp, Gray Wing and Turtle Tail find Tall Shadow teaching Hawk Swoop, Dappled Pelt, Cloud Spots, and Rainswept Flower about fighting techniques. Turtle Tail is surprised by this display, commenting that life on the moor must have changed if the cats now have to defend themselves from others. Gray Wing also spots Jagged Peak watching nearby, noting his disheartened expression. He recalls that Jagged Peak injured his leg after falling out of a tree was then sent away from the forest by Clear Sky, causing him to feel like a burden.
Shattered Ice interrupts by loudly announcing Turtle Tail's return to the camp. Rainswept Flower and Hawk Swoop warmly welcome their old friend, but Shattered Ice is still irritated by the white tortoiseshell's sudden appearance. Tall Shadow also greets Turtle Tail, promptly asking who the father of her expected kits is. Turtle Tail uncomfortably states she doesn't want him involved in her kits' lives, and Gray Wing believes this is because she was a kittypet. Nevertheless, Tall Shadow excitedly announces that Turtle Tail's kits will strengthen their group. Shattered Ice objects and claims they'll be a burden, still feeling betrayed by Turtle Tail's initial decision to leave the moor. Tall Shadow dismisses his complaints and he leaves, embarrassed.
Tall Shadow then pulls Turtle Tail aside to have a discussion with the white tortoiseshell, along with Gray Wing and Jagged Peak. Turtle Tail immediately expresses concern for Jagged Peak's injury. After he explains how he got it, Tall Shadow adds that this is why he now lives on the moor, optimistic that he'll make a full recovery in time. She continues on and asks Turtle Tail's opinion of the new camp, also showing curiosity as to why she returned. Turtle Tail responds by expressing how grateful she is to be in the beautiful place that was described in Stoneteller's vision.
Suddenly, Turtle Tail becomes distressed, believing she may not be able to help to the group as much while she's expecting kits. Tall Shadow protests, assuring her that she can still use her keen eyesight to guard the camp. When Turtle Tail asks why this is necessary, Tall Shadow explains that Clear Sky's group has become hostile towards intruders, and asks if she had seen any of these cats during her time in the Twolegplace. Tall Shadow then emphasizes that it's important for her to defend the group's hunting rights on the moor, given that tensions are rising between them and nearby rogues.
Turtle Tail vows to help however she can then adds that Clear Sky shouldn't be so territorial when prey is plentiful, despite Gray Wing's insistence that his brother is only doing what he feels is right. Jagged Peak joins in and offers to help Turtle Tail keep watch, but Tall Shadow politely declines. The leader insists that it's important for Jagged Peak to focus on resting and exercising in order to heal, causing him to turn away, visibly dejected. Gray Wing and Turtle Tail both suggest that Jagged Peak would feel better if he could provide some help to the group. Frustrated, Tall Shadow retorts that as a leader, it's difficult for her to make decisions. She then returns to her den, leaving Gray Wing and Turtle Tail confused by her sudden shift in tone.
