Chapter description[]

Turtle Tail comes back to the moor, and Gray Wing invites her on a tour of the hollow and the moors. He realizes that he is glad to have her back with him. They begin to leave when Rainswept Flower runs over to them, asking if she could come too so she could catch up with Turtle Tail. Gray Wing lets her join and Jagged Peak pads towards them, asking if he can also tag along. Rainswept Flower gently refuses, and tells him that he should do his exercises, but Jagged Peak walks away, complaining that the activity is boring, but she promises to help him when she comes back.
While walking, they spot a rabbit dash out across their path. Wind emerges from a bush to intercept it but misses her catch. Gorse appears from one of the bushes and they talk about hunting. He tells them that Clear Sky refuses to let the two rogues hunt in the forest. Gorse adds that he and his mate were chasing the same rabbit as Thorn and Dew. The rabbit could have been divided between the two groups, but instead, Thorn and Dew dragged the rabbit away. Gray Wing introduces the rogue to Turtle Tail, and Wind offers to show her the best places to hunt.
The wiry brown tabby she-cat leads the group toward the river leading into a tiny stream that falls into a crevice. Wind tells the moor cats that they can find a few mice here, or a vole here. Gorse leads the group back to the open moorland, and he points to some rabbit holes with his tail, saying that there are always a few rabbits lurking here. Wind comments to Turtle Tail and tells her that she is carrying extra weight, but Turtle Tail states that her kits are coming soon. Gorse replies that she needs easy hunting and suggests a pigeon will do.
They head for the river, and Turtle Tail sees a pigeon under a bush. Gorse rushes towards the pigeon, and it manages to slip away until Wind snags it with her claws. They all share the pigeon, and Turtle Tail comments that hunting has never been so fun, but Gray Wing warns her about the tensions between the groups. A silver cat behind them asks Gray Wing what he is talking about, and he introduces himself as River Ripple. He eyes the prey, and crouches to eat it and leaves. Gray Wing comments that the silver cat is strange.
The group hears a dog barking. Wind tells the moor cats that they should quickly return to the hollow and point to the direction of the hollow with her tail. Gray Wing and the others race across the moor. Turtle Tail tells him to go on ahead if he needs to, but Gray Wing refuses to leave her side. As they approach the camp, Gray Wing alerts the camp about the dogs. He hears barking behind him, and Gray Wing thinks in horror that they have been leading the dogs to camp by their scent. Tall Shadow tells eveyrone to scatter. Some cats go inside the tunnels, while others sprint towards the opposite direction. Tall Shadow climbs onto her rock. A small white dog leaps into the air, trying to get to the black she-cat, but can't reach the leader due to its stature. The other dogs are chewing some rabbit bones laid on the clearing. They finish the bones and sniffs at the subterranean passageway, that Shattered Ice and Jackdaw's Cry have been digging out. Turtle Tail gasps, because she knows that Jackdaw's Cry and his mate, Hawk Swoop are inside, protecting their two kits, Acorn Fur and Lightning Tail. The dogs dig at the earth, but a loud cry of a monster roaming on a nearby Thunderpath surprises the dogs, interrupting their digging. The dogs recover from the shock and leave the hollow.
The dogs' yowls fade out, and Jackdaw's Cry asks if the dogs are gone. Dappled Pelt reports that it is safe to come out. Gray Wing realizes that Thunder is missing and begin to alert the other cats of the ginger tom's disappearance, and the moor cats scatter again in search for Gray Wing's adopted son. He guesses that he is with Shattered Ice hunting on the moor and thinks that they could be at risk if the dogs see them. The situation worsens as Turtle Tail reports that Jagged Peak is missing as well.
