"Clear Sky is only concerned about helping every cat survive. He can't have favorites. And so that all cats know where he can hunt, he's making sure that the boundaries are respected. That's all we're asking for—a little respect."

Chapter description[]

Thunder follows Shattered Ice as the latter heads for the forest to hunt. The older tom assumes that the young kit has permission to be with him. Thunder replies that he did. Shattered Ice still looks skeptical but says little on the matter. Thunder manages to catch a shrew, but Shattered Ice remarks that they'll need more prey than that to feed everyone. The two toms continue, and Thunder stops and states that they shouldn't be in the forest. Shattered Ice snorts in amusement, saying he is here because he will not follow any cat's orders, besides the ones he respects, and he tells Thunder that he can go wherever he pleases.
They continue, and Shattered Ice notices that Thunder is struggling to keep up with his stride and advises Thunder to return to camp. He tells the gray-and-white tom that he can hunt and spots a rabbit nearby. He dashes off towards the rabbit but forgets about the dry leaves laying on the floor. The crackle from the dry leaves alerts the rabbit and Thunder fails to catch the rabbit, feeling shameful by his display. After a short laugh at the kit's expense, the older gray-and-white tom instructs Thunder on how to do a hunter's crouch. As he does, a voice calls out to them, accusing Shattered Ice of teaching Thunder how to steal prey.
Leaf and Petal appear and remain firm in accusing the moor cats of stealing prey. Shattered Ice retorts and says that they are trying to survive in the wild. Petal demands to return to their camp and tells them to spread the message that the forest is theirs. Shattered Ice insults her, sparking an argument between them. Before a fight could break out, Falling Feather and Moon Shadow arrive. Falling Feather tells Petal to knock it off, reminding the yellow she-cat of how Shattered Ice had saved her back in the mountains. Leaf announces that he and Petal have done nothing wrong. Moon Shadow offers to escort the two moor cats, but Shattered Ice rejects it, causing Moon Shadow to be aggressive. Falling Feather stops the two toms, and gently tells the gray-and-white cat that he must understand that her Clan's territory had changed, and that Clear Sky is trying to help his cats survive. At the white she-cat's words, Thunder feels shameful at their decision to enter the forest and casts an uncomfortable glance at his denmate, asking what they should do. Barking interrupts the gray-and-white cat's response, and he and Thunder leaves the forest cats. Realizing they must get back to the moor, Thunder hopes that they are not too late.
