Chapter description[]

Gray Wing watches the ground collapse, sealing the entrance of the tunnel. He heads towards the collapsed tunnel and begins to dig the soil. Thunder helps him dig, but the soil just sinks onto itself. Jackdaw's Cry and Rainswept Flower help him, digging frantically at the soil, but Wind orders them to stop. She and Gorse dig at the spot above where Jagged Peak disappeared. She says there is one more room for a cat and choose Jackdaw's Cry to help. Wind and Gorse continue digging, uncovering Jagged Peak's body and places him on the grass. Gray Wing can't see the gray tabby breathing, so he assumes that his brother is dead. Wind tells them not to lose hope, as she stuffs her paw into Jagged Peak's mouth and claws out some of the dirt. The unconscious tom awakes and coughs out some more dirt. They decide to go back to their camp, and Rainswept Flower suggests that Jagged Peak lead the way. Gray Wing thinks how clever the she-cat is being, knowing that Jagged Peak will regain his dignity.
The moor cats return to their camp, and Wind asks Gray Wing if he could talk to Tall Shadow to ask if she and her mate could join their group. Gray Wing says he will. Tall Shadow goes up to Gray Wing and asks if Thunder and Jagged Peak are safe. Gray Wing tells her that Jagged Peak is alive thanks to Wind and Gorse. He tells her about their request to join the group, but Tall Shadow says they can only stay for the evening, but must go, explaining that she needs to think about it.
The dark gray tom walks up to Jagged Peak and says that Jagged Peak must be tired and says that there is a soft spot on the moss where he can sleep. His younger brother snaps that he can take care of himself. Without thinking, he retorts if today proved that, making the gray tabby flinch before turning away. Gray Wing regrets his words, scolding himself for hurting his younger brother. He sees Rainswept Flower sitting next to Jagged Peak, which relieves him.
He realizes that the rest of the cats are at the bottom of the hollow and hears Thunder telling a story about how the dogs were chasing Jagged Peak, and tells the cats of Gray Wing's bravery, making them stare at Gray Wing with astonishment. Thunder begins to tell the story of how Wind had freed Jagged Peak from the tunnel. Dappled Pelt decides to check on Jagged Peak and asks if she could clean his scratches before it gets dark. Jagged Peak mutters to her to do what she wants. She checks his scratches and declares that it is nothing too serious but needs to check on it in the morning.
Gray Wing beckons for Gorse and Wind and reports to them what Tall Shadow had said. Both rogues nod understandingly, saying it is a big step for her. Gray Wing begins introducing the rogues to his campmates. Hawk Swoop's kits ask excitedly if the rogues do catch rabbits down their burrows, and if they can teach them. Gray Wing tells them that they will, all in good time, and asks the rogues if they want any prey.
Cloud Spots asks Shattered Ice and Thunder what they caught while they went off on their own. Thunder says he caught a shrew but had to abandon it due to the dogs. Tall Shadow declares that they need to talk about leading the dogs to camp and turns to Gray Wing. The dark gray tom replies that they were panicking. The cats decide to explore more of the land, and Dappled Pelt suggests that they need to plan out a few escape routes if dogs ever come to the hollow again. Gray Wing walks to Turtle Tail, and Turtle Tail tells him that she cannot wait to watch her kits grow up here, saying that the hollow is their home.
