Chapter description[]

Gray Wing and Turtle Tail catch up to Bumble. As they do, the gray tom hears someone calling his name and spots Wind and Gorse approaching them. Wind gives Bumble a curious glance, questioning who she is. Turtle Tail introduces her as her friend and as a kittypet, earning a wide-eyed glance from Gorse. The tortoiseshell kittypet stands up for herself, explaining her desires to join the moor cats. Wind half-heartedly wishes her luck as Gray Wing notes that she and her mate had been refused by Tall Shadow before. He watches them, expecting a furious response, but Gorse shrugs, and Wind states they'll come along back to their camp to see what will happen. Gray Wing thinks about protesting the idea but doesn't as Wind follows them.
In camp, they find Tall Shadow watching over the busy camp. The black cat leaps down to meet Gray Wing and the others, just as other cats crowd the newcomers. Jagged Peak, and others, look over Bumble curiously as Tall Shadow questions why Gray Wing would bring her to their camp. He tells her that Bumble had shown up, expressing her wishes to join their group. The leader and the tom quickly converse before Tall Shadow confronts Bumble, wanting to know why she wants to leave her kittypet life. Bumble explains that another kittypet attacks her, adding that it had been worse since Turtle Tail had left them. Gray Wing is taken aback by her claim, wondering if the she-cat is blaming her friend. Tall Shadow suggests the two try and make peace, but Bumble tells her to say that to Tom instead of her. As Tall Shadow continues, the gray tom notices she is trying to gently tell Bumble she can't join their group.
However, Wind breaks into the conversation and bluntly tells Bumble that the harsh lifestyle wouldn't suit her and she would instead burden the group instead of contributing to it. Tall Shadow says nothing to acknowledge Wind, but offers to escort Bumble back to the Twolegplace. However, Wind and Gorse step forward to do so instead. As Bumble is escorted away, she calls out to Turtle Tail, saying that she would never forgive her friend. Gray Wing shakes his head in confusion at her words but follows Tall Shadow back to her rock, sitting silently with her until she decides to speak.
Tall Shadow asks Gray Wing if she should let Wind and Gorse join them. He voices his opinion, thinking they should given what they've done for them in the past. The two cats look over the camp for a moment, watching their friends below. The black she-cat mentions the group's leadership and considers giving up her role as their leader. Gray Wing protests, but quietly recalls his dream from Stoneteller that implied his leadership role within the group. Tall Shadow stares at the horizon before asking to be left alone, leaving Gray Wing at a loss for words to reassure her. His thoughts turn to Wind as he thinks about her leadership qualities.
