"And as for you... Keep your eyes open, Fireheart. Keep your ears pricked. Keep looking behind you. Because one day I'll find you, and then you'll be crow-food."
Tigerclaw threatening Fireheart as he is exiled in Forest of Secrets, page 289

Tigerclaw's betrayal was an event that took place from Redtail's Debt to Forest of Secrets, where Tigerclaw attempted to seize control of ThunderClan.

Summary[]

Premise[]

"Tigerpaw is so angry all the time. I...I think he's trying to prove to us that he's nothing like his father, that he'd never leave ThunderClan to become a kittypet."
―Spottedpaw to Thistleclaw Spottedleaf's Heart, chapter 4
As the lone survivor from Pinestar and Leopardfoot's only litter, Tigerkit's future was predestined by an omen from Goosefeather to bring destruction to the forest.[4] His sisters' deaths and his father deciding to become a kittypet result in his mother becoming that much more protective of him, convinced that her son could do no wrong[5] and needs to be the best warrior in the Clan.[6]
Apprenticed to Thistleclaw, Tigerpaw's brutality is encouraged by his mentor, who brutally trains him and fosters his hatred for cats outside his Clan.[7] With the shadow of his father's betrayal, Tigerclaw's anger grows as he vows to be the best warrior in ThunderClan.[8] He continues following in his mentor's pawsteps after becoming a warrior, establishing himself as a senior warrior[9] and showing an eagerness to fight on his Clan's behalf,[10] wanting to make them as strong as TigerClan[2] and willing to go to any length to ensure that his Clan would remain safe.[11]

Overview[]

"I'm not going to let any cat disrespect my Clan or our borders. What about you, Redtail? I thought you'd grown to be a brave ThunderClan warrior. [...] Are you still a mouse-hearted 'paw?"
―Tigerclaw to Redtail Redtail's Debt, chapter 4
Believing he is the only one who can bring ThunderClan to greatness, Tigerclaw proves himself to be a hypocrite; despising anyone he deems a traitor yet becoming one himself by betraying his birth Clan, his kin, and his allies. In the same breath as critizing cats who break the warrior code, he himself breaks and twists it to further his ambition. Despite his hatred for those outside of the Clans, as evidenced by his continued threats against Fireheart,[2] he allies himself with rogues to complete his goals.[12]
Over the course of his time as a ThunderClan warrior, he continually schemes against his Clanmates, starting with saving Redpaw and telling the young tom that he owes Tigerclaw his life.[13] Redtail begins to come to the realization that Tigerclaw will stop at nothing to prove ThunderClan's strength, even as Bluefur is seriously injured during a battle with WindClan that Tigerclaw provoked.[14] Tigerclaw continually questions Redtail even after he becomes Bluestar's deputy, eventually leading to Redtail's death at Tigerclaw's, with the tortoiseshell tom realizing that Tigerclaw will kill every cat standing against him.[1]
Tigerclaw's schemes do not stop when he becomes Clan deputy. He begins to spread rumors about his own apprentice, Ravenpaw, knowing he saw what truly happened at Sunningrocks.[15] Over the course of the following moons, Tigerclaw continues to further his ambition, working to throw Fireheart off his trail as the ginger tom closes in on the truth, attempting to murder his own leader multiple times, and seeking aid from ThunderClan's prisoner, Brokentail in a bid to attack from the inside.[2]

Description[]

Redtail and Tigerclaw[]

«His mind suddenly raced with questions. What did Ravenpaw know? At the Gathering, had his account of the battle with RiverClan been true? Was Tigerclaw responsible for Redtail's death?»
—Firepaw's thoughts after Lionheart's death Into the Wild, page 199
Redtail.TPB-2

Redtail was loyal to Tigerclaw during part of his life after Tigerclaw saved him from a hawk

During Redtail's deputyship, Tigerclaw continually attempts to steamroll Redtail's attempts at keeping peace with their neighbors, constantly ready to rush into battle.[11] During one of the skirmishes along the RiverClan border, Redtail calls for a retreat to protect their Clanmates. Tigerclaw directly suggests to Bluestar that ThunderClan reclaims Sunningrocks, and while she initially agrees with her deputy's assessment on waiting for injuries to heal, she caves under Tigerclaw's pressure and allows him to mark the border. He, Redtail, and Ravenpaw make the journey towards the border, and are ambushed by a RiverClan patrol.[16]
During the confrontation, Tigerclaw orders Ravenpaw back to camp. Ravenpaw ran into the trees instead, deciding to stay in case his mentor and Redtail need more help. When he reapproaches the rocks, however, the RiverClan warriors are fleeing, and Ravenpaw watches Tigerclaw ambush Redtail, ultimately killing him in the hopes of becoming deputy.[17]

Growing suspicions[]

"I have to say I agree with you, Darkstripe. Even though he's my own apprentice..."

Tigerclaw becomes deputy.TPB-1

After Lionheart and Redtail's untimely deaths, Tigerclaw ultimately became deputy

In the aftermath of Redtail's death, and knowing his apprentice has seen his actions, Tigerclaw and Ravenpaw's relationship further deteriorates. Tigerclaw threatens the apprentice into silence, ensuring that Ravenpaw would not reveal the truth of what happened at Sunningrocks: instead of Oakheart killing Redtail and Tigerclaw killing Oakheart as vengeance, Tigerclaw killed Redtail.[note 1] Tigerclaw grows suspicious of Firepaw when he first joins ThunderClan, especially as the ginger tom befriends Ravenpaw. After Ravenpaw retells the story about the battle at Sunningrocks during a Gathering, Tigerclaw is furious, as their stories about the event do not match up.[15]
After Lionheart's death during Brokenstar's first attempt at stealing ThunderClan kits, Tigerclaw succeeds the fallen warrior as deputy, moving one step closer to becoming Clan leader. Ravenpaw is horrified, mentioning the dark tabby's hunger for power since taking care of Redtail, though Firepaw does not know what the black tom means.[19] Tigerclaw confronts Firepaw and Ravenpaw, asking if Ravenpaw is explaining how he protected Redtail and startling the two toms. Firepaw jumps in to hastily answer that Ravenpaw just wished Tigerclaw could've protected Lionheart, too. Ravenpaw slinks back, however, clearly terrified as the massive tom looms over them. He decides to appoint his two loyalists, Darkstripe and Longtail, as Bluestar's guards. As the camp rebuilding efforts begin, Tigerclaw openly wonders how ShadowClan knew the perfect moment to attack, staring at Ravenpaw as he does.[20]
Firepaw sneaks away from camp to retrieve herbs for Yellowfang, but as he does, he scents Tigerclaw, Darkstripe, and Longtail. He decides to eavesdrop on their conversation, where Tigerclaw tells the other two toms that Ravenpaw snuck away from Mothermouth to report to ShadowClan. Darkstripe and Longtail agree with his words easily, and Tigerclaw shows faux remorse as he agrees with Darkstripe's thoughts on the Clan being better off without the apprentice. Firepaw sneaks back towards camp, intent on telling Bluestar what he's overheard, and decides to not tell Ravenpaw.[20]
Tigerclaw begins sending Ravenpaw on more dangerous assignments in an attempt to further paint the apprentice as a traitor, such as sending Ravenpaw to hunt in ShadowClan territory. Unable to wait any longer, Firepaw reveals what he overheard after ShadowClan's attack, and Ravenpaw is horrified. Ravenpaw finally reveals the truth of Redtail's death, and Firepaw promises to help him.[17]
In the aftermath of Frostfur's kits being stolen and Spottedleaf being killed, rumors begin to circulate. Firepaw overhears Speckletail and Frostfur speculating that Yellowfang stole the kits with Ravenpaw's help, and the ginger tom realizes his friend is no longer safe anywhere in the Clan. On Bluestar's orders, Firepaw readies himself to venture out in the storm to find Yellowfang and return her for questioning. Graypaw joins him, though he is initially confused as to why Tigerclaw is not leading the search. Firepaw reveals that Ravenpaw is in danger, and the two toms decide to bring him to Barley's farm.[21]
During the journey, Firepaw and Ravenpaw finally explain the full truth to Graypaw: that Ravenpaw saw Tigerclaw kill Redtail. Firepaw adds that Tigerclaw has spread rumors about Ravenpaw throughout the camp to turn their Clanmates against him, knowing that Ravenpaw can no longer be in ThunderClan. At the border of WindClan's territory, Firepaw and Graypaw say their goodbyes to Ravenpaw, with Firepaw solemly stating that he will tell the Clan that Ravenpaw has died.[21] Once the kits are rescued from ShadowClan, Tigerclaw and Bluestar ask after Ravenpaw. Firepaw lies to them, explaining that they found Ravenpaw's body in ShadowClan territory, likely killed by an enemy patrol. He promises to tell Bluestar more later, bristling as Tigerclaw fake-mourns his apprentice.[22]

The message[]

"A battle is coming, Fireheart. Beware a warrior you cannot trust."

Cinderpelt.TPB-2

Cinderpaw is injured after being struck by a monster in a trap Tigerclaw set for Bluestar

During his vigil, Fireheart reflects on the story Ravenpaw told him. He tries to tell Bluestar of his suspicions, though she is immediately appalled at the accusations. She scolds Fireheart for questioning Redtail's honor and accusing Tigerclaw of killing Redtail, insisting that her deputy is innocent.[23] Fireheart begins to doubt the things he has heard about Tigerclaw, especially after gaining his first apprentice, Cinderpaw. After she lies and covers for Graystripe when he falls in the river, he is reminded of Ravenpaw, wondering if his friend had just been telling a story. His doubt is further compounded by how the other cats of ThunderClan treat Tigerclaw: with admiration, not suspicion.[24]
When Bluestar and several other cats fall ill with greencough, Tigerclaw attempts to summon her at the Thunderpath. Fireheart asks Dustpaw, the messenger, the reasoning, explaining that Bluestar is too ill to leave camp. Dustpaw explains that Tigerclaw is insistent that Bluestar make an appearance, as he has found evidence of ShadowClan hunting on their territory. Despite being told to stay in camp, Cinderpaw goes to meet Tigerclaw herself, where she is struck by a monster.[25]
Fireheart goes to visit his sister, Princess, troubled by the sickness in ThunderClan and his apprentice's injury. He mentions that he does not understand why Tigerclaw wanted Bluestar at the Thunderpath, as there was no evidence of trespassing, to which Princess wonders if it was a trap. At first, Fireheart is confused initially, uncertain as to why Tigerclaw would want to hurt Cinderpaw, until Princess explains that he might've set the trap for Bluestar. The realization dawns on Fireheart, though he initially hopes that Tigerclaw would not deliberately put Bluestar's life in danger.[26]
Fireheart later asks Cinderpaw if she remembers what happened at the Thunderpath. While she struggles to recall the details, she remembers going to the spot Dustpaw told her about, but did not see Tigerclaw. Fireheart grows suspicious again, furious that Tigerclaw was not where he should have been, and again wonders if it was a trap.[27] Tigerclaw watches Cloudkit playing with a moss ball, and stares at Fireheart as he warns the ginger tom to not lose another plaything. Fireheart wonders again if Cinderpaw was another thing he had lost, growing more convinced that Tigerclaw was behind Cinderpaw's accident.[28]
During the battle in WindClan's camp, Tigerclaw watches as Leopardfur viciously attacks Fireheart, refusing to assist. Fireheart recalls a warning Spottedleaf gave him, realizing that it is about Tigerclaw. He realizes that Ravenpaw had been telling the truth, as Tigerclaw did not seem to have any issue killing in the heat of the moment. When Tigerclaw confronts Fireheart on allowing a RiverClan cat to escape, Fireheart realizes that the accusations are due to Tigerclaw's fear of the truth getting out.[29]

The battle for Sunningrocks[]

"Redtail spat at Oakheart. He asked him if RiverClan warriors were unable to fight their own battles. Redtail was brave. The RiverClan deputy was twice his size. And then... then Oakheart said a strange thing. He told Redtail, 'No ThunderClan cat will ever harm that warrior.'"
―Ravenpaw about the battle at Sunningrocks Forest of Secrets, chapter 2
Tigerclaw kills Redtail.TPB-1

Ravenpaw recounts Redtail's murder.

Fireheart decides to speak with Ravenpaw again, hoping to find some new info that will convince Bluestar of the truth. Graystripe joins him, and the two leave for Barley's farm from the Gathering.[30] During their talk, Ravenpaw insists that he saw Tigerclaw kill Redtail, explaining what happened during the battle: how Redtail and Oakheart fought, and one of the rocks collapsed on top of Oakheart. He continues, telling Fireheart and Graystripe about how he stayed and saw Tigerclaw pin Redtail before killing him. Graystripe points out that Oakheart's death does not prove Tigerclaw as a murderer, though Fireheart realizes that it will by proving Tigerclaw is a liar. Graystripe points out that Ravenpaw's original story did not include the falling rocks, and Ravenpaw promises that he meant to include it. Fireheart excitedly explains that the reason Bluestar did not believe them was due to the thought that Redtail killed Oakheart. He decides against asking Ravenpaw more questions, and he and Graystripe return to the Clan.[31]
On the return trip, Fireheart muses over how he can convince Bluestar, and what evidence he would need. He decides to ask the RiverClan cats himself, and Graystripe offers to set up a meeting between Fireheart and Silverstream.[31] Silverstream meets Fireheart and Graystripe in RiverClan's territory, and while she does not know all the details of the battle, she brings Mistyfoot to speak with Fireheart.[32]
Mistyfoot is initially suspicious over Fireheart's questions, but relents and agrees to speak with him. She reveals that Oakheart was her father, and that his death was an accident: despite being wounded, the injuries were not severe enough for him to die, and his body was found under a rockfall. Her story confirms Ravenpaw's claims that Redtail did not kill him. He recalls Ravenpaw's words about Stonefur, and asks Mistyfoot about what Oakheart may have meant. Mistyfoot tells him that Stonefur is her littermate, but that her father never tried to protect them like that. Despite her puzzlement, she mentions that her mother, Graypool, may know, and Mistyfoot decides to send a message with Silverstream once she manages to get the elder away from camp.[32]
The next day, Fireheart meets up with Graypool. Fireheart asks her about the battle for Sunningrocks, confused as to what Oakheart's words mean. Graypool reveals that she is not Stonefur and Mistyfoot's biological mother, and that the kits were born in ThunderClan.[33] She warns Fireheart about ever revealing the information, and he accepts that as the potential reason for Oakheart's words.[34]
Once he returns to camp, Fireheart approaches Bluestar. She is displeased when he brings up Ravenpaw's claims again, though ultimately listens as Fireheart explains Oakheart's death and reveals he went to see Ravenpaw. She challenges his story, as Ravenpaw's two claims do not line up, and Fireheart tells her that he misunderstood. He brings up his meeting with Mistyfoot, further troubling Bluestar. She remarks that Tigerclaw is a good deputy, but grows furious when Fireheart brings up how two ThunderClan kits ended up in RiverClan. Bluestar sends him away after telling him to never speak of it again, putting another dent in Fireheart's investigation.[34]

Secret Twolegplace meetings[]

"They were thin and hungry-looking. Their fur was all mangy. They were horrible, Fireheart!"
―Princess reporting the strange cats to her brother Forest of Secrets, chapter 25
Princess.TPB-2

Princess, Fireheart's sister, acts as a sounding board for Fireheart's initial concerns

After Cloudkit is punished by Tigerclaw for sneaking out of camp, Fireheart helps the young tom care for the elders. The two cats are collecting moss for bedding when Fireheart notices Tigerclaw slipping away from camp, and elects to follow him. Tigerclaw's trail leads towards the Twolegplace where Fireheart's sister and Cloudkit's mother, Princess, lives, worried for her safety. Tigerclaw and Fireheart run into each other, exchanging tense words for a brief few moments before parting. Fireheart continues following Tigerclaw's trail, smelling strange cats but finding no proof that Tigerclaw met with anyone.[35]
Fireheart reports back to Bluestar on his findings, but does not mention his suspicions on Tigerclaw.[36] When he and Graystripe are punished for feeding RiverClan, Fireheart notices that Tigerclaw and Brokentail have gotten close, surprising him.[37] The stream on ThunderClan's territory floods, and Tigerclaw makes Fireheart test a weak branch, and the ginger tom falls into the water.[38] He is saved by Longtail, but wonders if Tigerclaw deliberately tried to drown him.[39]
Cloudpaw later becomes an apprentice, and Fireheart takes him to visit Princess. On the way, Fireheart smells Tigerclaw and the same unknown cats as before, and Princess reveals that there are strange cats around. Princess promises to report anything she sees to Fireheart before they part ways.[40]

The attempted coup[]

"I'm going to kill you, and kill you again. As many times as it takes for you to join StarClan forever. It's time for me to lead this Clan!"
―Tigerclaw to Bluestar Forest of Secrets, page 274
After assigning patrols to ensure the ThunderClan camp is left nearly completely undefended, Cloudpaw reports to Fireheart that he saw Tigerclaw speaking with strange cats. Fireheart realizes they may be remnants of Brokentail's supporters, and the band of rogues streams towards ThunderClan's camp.[41] At first, upon reaching the camp, Fireheart wonders if he is mistaken, as Tigerclaw calls ThunderClan to fight the intruders, but realizes that he is fighting with sheathed claws.[42]
Fireheart tells Cloudpaw to retrieve the warriors on patrol, and throws himself into the battle along with his Clanmates. It is then that Fireheart, seeing Brokentail and Dustpelt grappling each other, that Fireheart realizes Tigerclaw had been colluding with the former leader the entire time. Realizing that both Bluestar and Tigerclaw are nowhere to be found, he approaches the leader's den and finds the two inside, where Tigerclaw attacks her.[42]
Fireheart fights Tigerclaw, defending Bluestar from the deputy's vicious attack. He manages to subdue the dark tabby, calling for Bluestar to help pin him to the floor. The commotion summons Graystripe, who announces that they need more help, and Fireheart offers to trade places with him before rejoining the main battle. Several RiverClan warriors race into camp alongside Whitestorm's patrol, forcing the remaining invaders to flee.[2]

Aftermath[]

"Do you think I can't tell when a cat tries to murder me?"
―Bluestar to Darkstripe Forest of Secrets, chapter 28
Escorted by Sandstorm and Brackenfur, Tigerclaw collapses to the dirt at the base of the Highrock. Bluestar weakly summons her Clan, announcing his status as a prisoner due to having attempted to murder her. Darkstripe questions her claims, and Bluestar prompts Fireheart to share what he knows. Fireheart reveals Ravenpaw's claims and the RiverClan warriors' own version of the events, revealing to ThunderClan just how deep Tigerclaw's quest for power ran. Bluestar exiles him, though Tigerclaw attempts to convince Darkstripe, Longtail, and Dustpelt to follow him. The three toms refuse, and Tigerclaw leaves ThunderClan after threatening revenge on Fireheart.[2] As he prepares to leave, the voice in his head taunts him for losing the battle.[12] While Bluestar struggles to reconcile Tigerclaw's actions, she fails to name a new deputy before the moonhigh deadline. She eventually names Fireheart her next deputy, as he is the last remaining cat she trusts.[3]

Characters[]

Tigerclaw[]

"I would have brought back the days of TigerClan. I would have made ThunderClan great!"
Tigerclaw to Bluestar Tigerclaw's Fury, chapter 1
Tigerstar.TPB-2

Tigerclaw is exiled for his crimes, eventually becoming ShadowClan's leader

The only surviving kit of Pinestar and Leopardfoot, Tigerclaw's rise to bloodthirst began at a young age, thanks to his father being largely absent and leaving ThunderClan.[43][44] His mentor, Thistleclaw, likely became the first fatherly figure he ever knew,[9] and his brutal teaching style molded a young Tigerpaw into a formidable foe.[45]
As a warrior, Tigerclaw proves himself to be a hypocrite; hating those he deems traitors while being a traitor himself in the end. He shows many machiavellianistic tendencies, believing that his actions are all a means to make ThunderClan the strongest Clan in the forest.[2] Despite his tenacity in pursuing his goals, his plans continue to fail, especially after Fireheart's relentless pursuit of the truth begins.[17] Once he is exiled from ThunderClan, his loyalty shifts across Clan borders, where he steps in to the power vacuum created in the wake of Nightstar's death, seizing power and becoming ShadowClan's leader.[46] With the might and loyalty of an entire Clan behind him, the newly appointed Tigerstar is able to further his ambition, creating TigerClan in a bid to take over the forest and seek revenge on those who he deems traitors to the warrior code.[47]

Fireheart[]

"Cats of ThunderClan, do you remember when Redtail died? Tigerclaw told you that Oakheart killed him, but he was lying. It was Tigerclaw who killed Redtail!"
―Fireheart in the aftermath of Tigerclaw's defeat Forest of Secrets, chapter 28
Firestar.TPB-2

Fireheart works to uncover the truth behind Redtail's death

Fireheart's relentless drive to uncover what truly happened at Sunningrocks eventually nets him the truth: that Tigerclaw killed Redtail, not Oakheart, thanks to testimony from Ravenpaw[31] and Mistyfoot.[32] Even with Bluestar not believing him initially, Fireheart does not give up his quest for information, and proves himself a loyal ThunderClan warrior with his willingness to lay down his life to protect Bluestar.[2] He reveals everything he knows to his Clanmates after Tigerclaw's defeat, and succeeds the bloodthirsty tom as ThunderClan's next deputy.[3]

Ravenpaw[]

Ravenpaw: "Oh no! She should have never chosen him!"
Firepaw: "Are you talking about Tigerclaw?"
Ravenpaw: "He's wanted to be deputy ever since he took care of Redtail—"

Ravenpaw, having witnessed Tigerclaw murdering Redtail, is forced to flee ThunderClan

Ravenpaw witnesses Tigerclaw murder Redtail at the battle for Sunningrocks.[15] With Tigerclaw willing to go to unspeakable lengths to prevent the truth from ever being revealed, Ravenpaw's life is put in danger. Ravenpaw is subject to harassment from his Clanmates thanks to Tigerclaw spreading rumors about him, and is assigned code-breaking and dangerous tasks in an effort to silence him forever.[17] Ravenpaw is eventually forced to flee to Barley's farm for his own safety,[21] where Fireheart and Graystripe visit him to ask for more detail about the battle.[31] With his claims backed up by Mistyfoot's recounts of the battle,[32] Fireheart is able to prove Tigerclaw's guilt to ThunderClan.[2]

Quotes[]

Redtail: "Why?"
Tigerclaw: "You were in my way, Redtail. It's nothing personal, but ThunderClan needs a real deputy. I'm just doing what I should have let that hawk do back when you were a 'paw."
Redtail: "But...you saved my life."
Tigerclaw: "And you should have been loyal from then on. But you weren't. So, better for me, better for the Clan, if you're not here."
—Redtail as Tigerclaw delivers a fatal blow to him Redtail's Debt, chapter 10

Firepaw: "Ravenpaw, I heard Tigerclaw telling Darkstripe and Longtail that you betrayed ThunderClan. He told them you slipped away during the trip to Mothermouth and told ShadowClan that the camp was unguarded."
Ravenpaw: "But I didn't!"
Firepaw: "Of course you didn't. But Darkstripe and Longtail believe you did, and Tigerclaw persuaded them that they should get rid of you."
—Firepaw warning Ravenpaw about Tigerclaw's plan for him Into the Wild, page 222

«But he couldn't make himself believe it. And as Fireheart padded more slowly over to the fresh-kill pile, he wished to the tip of his claws that he could be freed from the burden of what he knew.»
—Fireheart's knowledge of Tigerclaw Forest of Secrets, page 90

Tigerclaw: "Remember me to StarClan, Bluestar."
Bluestar: "Tigerclaw, what is this? I'm the leader of your Clan, or have you forgotten?"
Tigerclaw: "Not for much longer. I'm going to kill you, and kill you again. As many times as it takes for you to join StarClan forever. It's time for me to lead this Clan!"
—Tigerclaw attempting to murder Bluestar Forest of Secrets, pages 273-274

Errors[]

  • There is a major continuity error with Oakheart's death: in Redtail's Debt, he is killed by Redtail himself,[1] however the foundation of The Prophecies Begin relies upon the fact that Oakheart was not killed by Redtail, and instead was crushed in a rockfall.[18]

  1. Redtail's Debt depicts Oakheart's death being caused by Redtail.[1] However, one of the foundational aspects of The Prophecies Begin was that he did not die that way, and instead was confirmed to be killed by a rockfall.[18]
