"I'm a warrior, so fighting us for this prey won't be as easy as you think. I'm sorry you've lost your home, but this is a big city. Maybe you should look elsewhere for somewhere to live. I fought three of you earlier and I don't have a single wound. And I've taught these cats how to fight like warriors too."

Chapter description[]

Having escaped the Twolegs, Fierce and Fog rekindle the argument about Fog’s attempted stealing of Tigerheart's rabbit. Fierce argues that Fog had no need to be greedy, giving Tigerheart a seed of hope that Fierce has finally realized why cats have to defend what they own. The debate continues, leading to Fog explaining that foxes drove her group out of their old home of scrub near some Twoleg dens. Tigerheart begins to grow uneasy, as Fog and her forces outnumber them. However, he is able to intimidate Fog into leaving by reminding her how everyone on his side has been trained by Tigerheart, and he himself doesn't have a single wound from fighting them. They leave, and once again, Fierce denies that the guardian cats need borders, blaming Tigerheart for the disruption and conflict that has occurred since his arrival.
When the group returns, Tigerheart tells Dovewing of the altercation that occurred between Fog's group. He decides not to burden her with his worries that city cats have no code at all, thinking of them as almost no better than rogues. Meanwhile, Shadowkit, Lightkit and Pouncekit ask him for a 'bodger' ride. He corrects them, telling that the animal is called 'badger', which eventually leads to him telling the kits about how Tigerheart once fought one, with the help of two fellow warriors. The kits are amazed that Tigerheart eventually scared the badger away, mewing their admiration for him. As Tigerheart puts Pouncekit, Lightkit, and Shadowkit to sleep, they continue to pester him for the description of hawks.
Later, Dovewing mews that it's nicer to be in the city with Tigerheart, away from the judgement of the Clans. He agrees, but doesn't feel that the city is a proper home for them to raise a family. Regardless of her own opinion, Dovewing says that they'll have to raise their kits as warriors in ShadowClan, feeling as though she shouldn't let herself distract him from leading the Clan. Suddenly, Tigerheart is conscious of the possibility that he was replaced as deputy of ShadowClan due to his disappearance, but is reassured by Dovewing. Memories of Shadowkit's words to him of the forest make Tigerheart tense. Thinking of the future of each of the kits is worrying - whether they will become warriors, or something not as honourable, delayed by their lack of travelling capabilities. However, his train of thought is soon interrupted by sighting an intruder, and Tigerheart recognizes the wide ears of Fog. Tigerheart thinks about how to stop her from making another move, concluding that he must drive the foxes out of her territory.
