"Fog believes in every cat looking after himself. Her denmates probably feel the same. Do you want cats here who are only interested in filling their own bellies? I've met cats like Fog before. In the forest, we call them rogues. They have no pity for sick cats. They see them as burdens. Inviting Fog to join this group would destroy everything you've built here!"

Chapter description[]

Tigerheart calls a meeting to discuss his plan to get rid of the foxes that took over Fog and her group's former home. Fierce agrees but insists they must first figure out how many foxes are there, and Tigerheart believes they have a better chance of driving them away if Fog and her group help. He believes that Fog will fight for the guardian cats' home soon if they don't act now, though Fierce and a few others are still unsure if Fog is a threat to them. Dotty argues that Tigerheart's skills might be better off with his Clan and presses him to explain why he left. Rascal and Mittens arrive with news of Fog's cats and Twoleg scents around their home, suspecting they were snooping around earlier. Fierce agrees that they should practice battle moves, and Tigerheart suggests they should practice outside in the rougher terrain. He and Dovewing agree to let their kits outside the gathering place for the first time as well, and the three kits are eager to finally explore outside.
Before they go outside, Tigerheart notices Spire sitting in a patch of sun in the den. Wondering if the healer is having a vision, Tigerheart sits next to him, and Spire reveals that Blaze will live beside the lake, but Spire will not. The ShadowClan deputy presses for further information if he and his family make it home safely, but Spire reveals nothing more. Outside with his family, Pouncekit, Lightkit, and Shadowkit eagerly explore the grass. While his kits play, Tigerheart takes charge of the battle training session with the guardian cats. He notices Fog and a few of her cats prowling in the distance. As they resume practicing fighting foxes, Pouncekit suddenly squeals in terror. The tiny kit is trapped in a silver mesh cage, and Shadowkit cries that his sister is trapped forever.
