"Tigerheart felt a wave of gratitude toward the black-and-white tom, and realized that he was surprised at how willing Dash had been to help. He'd expected a city cat to only care about himself. But then he remembered Fog. She might have behaved like a rogue, but she'd stayed loyal to her group, hadn't she? And he could still remember her wail of grief as she'd watched the Twolegs carry her brother away. Perhaps all cats were warriors at heart. He glanced at Cinnamon and Ant. He hoped so, at least."

Chapter description[]

Cinnamon guides the patrol to the station since she used to live in this part of the city before living with the guardian cats. Once they arrive, Tigerheart takes the lead to find Dash, the loner who helped him when he first arrived at the city moons ago. Leading the others through the crowds of Twolegs and the loud noises of several monsters, Tigerheart guides them through a tunnel to Dash's den near a Twoleg nest. Tigerheart finds the black-and-white tom in his den. While Dash is willing to help, he's dubious of Tigerheart's plan to walk through the tunnels on the Silverpaths instead of riding in a Thundersnake, which would be much safer and faster with kits. The ShadowClan deputy insists he's done it before and needs help figuring out which tunnel will take him back to the lake. Dash finally relents.
Tigerheart locates which tunnel he arrived in, and Dash guides them safely down to the empty tunnel. He sharply informs the others to be mindful where they step and to avoid touching the tracks. The station cat decides to lead them through the tunnel for his own peace of mind, and Tigerheart feels grateful for his willingness to help, wondering if all cats are warriors at heart. As the lights from the station disappear in the distance, the group walks in darkness. Pouncekit asks for a badger ride, but Tigerheart insists she must learn to walk long distances on their journey. A Thundersnake quickly approaches, and the patrol clutches to the edge of the tunnel as it loudly zooms by. The kits are excited by the Thundersnake's speed, though the others are skeptical of its loud noise. Tigerheart presses them to continue.
The group hides as two more Thundersnakes zoom past them. After walking for a long time, Tigerheart detects the scent of fresh air up ahead. The cats hurry forward and soon emerge in the open night sky. The kits are unaccustomed to the silence outside the city, but Tigerheart points out the stars above them and they are bewildered by the sight. Dash announces he's heading back to the city and wishes them luck on their journey. Tigerheart leads the others onward to make camp for the night, and he and Dovewing are eager to begin their journey again.
