"I was so grateful for you. I thought I was a happy loner, doing whatever I wanted, wherever and whenever I wanted, was what it meant to have a good life. I was wrong. Dying to save you was the best thing I ever did."

Chapter description[]

Root tells both Tree and Pebbleshine to run, as the younger tom wakes the she-cat. Tree catches the scent of fox as the queen questions where they should run. The tom suggests across the Thunderpath, before they cross though, a fox leaps out at them. Tree aims a blow at the animal's eye, but misses. However, he and Pebbleshine work together, and drive the fox away. Pebbleshine suggets they cross before anything else comes to harm them, while Tree silently thanks his father. The speckled she-cat thanks the yellow loner for his help that morning, especially for saving her kits as well. She explains that she's going to look for SkyClan, and offers for him to join her. However, Tree declines, believing the life of a Clan not to suit him. Pebbleshine tells him he'll always have a place within SkyClan and leaves, determined.
Tree finds his father's ghost on a branch and apologizes for his death. Root reassures his son that he shouldn't feel guilty and thanks him as well for opening up his mind to other ways of life. The tom expresses his pride in Tree, but the younger tom notes that he hadn't saved Pebbleshine. But, Root continues, noting to his son that a friendship can be stronger than kinship. His father's ghost fades away, but not without reminding Tree that he won't always be alone and that they will speak again. Tree recalls his father's words and is left with an excited feeling and thinks about the fact that there might be someone who he will grow to care deeply about.
