Chapter description[]
- Tree reaches for the chicken, but smells a strange cat scent. The cat tells Tree to come out, and he appears, respectfully asking if this was her territory. He notes she is expecting kits, but the she-cat informs him she doesn't eat Twoleg food. She pricks her ears for the sound of prey, and dashes away, bring out a rat afterwards. Tree praises the pregnant cat, and she offers to share, which the yellow tom declines, but offers to eat together.
- He introduces himself, and the she-cat introduces herself as Pebbleshine. Tree compliments on her name, and Pebbleshine explains about SkyClan and Leafstar, explaining she got lost on a journey. The six-toed tom expresses his doubts, but Pebbleshine firmly tells Tree StarClan will help her, for they have a destiny ahead of them. Pebbleshine offers for Tree to join her in her search for SkyClan, but Tree states he is only a loner, and that his mother abandoned him when he was young. The queen expresses her sympathy, telling Tree he is a good cat, and she will search for SkyClan tomorrow morning. Tree leads them into a bush, where they settle for the night. A voice wakes Tree and he leaps up, and realizes it is Root.
