Trout Fur is born to Kite alongside his littermates, Snow Tail and Willow Stream, just as their mother finds River Ripple's group, wanting to join so her kits could grow up in a safe place. Later, River Ripple watches Trout Fur, Snow Tail, and Willow Stream play with the older kits, Drizzle and Pine. River Ripple and Night discuss potential trainers for the five kits, with River Ripple suggesting Dawn to help her acclimate to the group. Two days later, River Ripple leads the five kits over the frozen river to explore. Trout Fur points out a small indentation in the snow and asks if it is a vole hole, much to Drizzle's amusement. When Thunder and Clear Sky arrive with news, River Ripple asks Pine Needle and Drizzle to lead the younger kits back to camp.

Moons later, Trout Fur and Willow Stream learn battle moves from Dawn Mist and Moss Tail. When Riverstar and Drizzle return from their journey, Shattered Ice points out how the Clan has built a den just for the young apprentices to sleep in. He later shares tongues with his littermates while Kite Wing chats with Finch. Riverstar later performs an apprentice ceremony for Trout Fur, Willow Stream, and Snow Tail, officially naming Dawn Mist, Moss Tail, and Croak their mentors. At their first Gathering, Trout Fur and Snow Tail are nervous while Willow Stream eagerly chats with apprentices from the other Clans.

Riverstar: You three kits were the first to be born into RiverClan. We are stronger for having you, and I hope that one day you will have kits in your turn and make RiverClan stronger still. You've been sleeping in the apprentices' den for a while, and Croak, Dawn Mist, and Moss Tail has been training you. But it's time we acknowledge it formally. From tonight, Croak will be Snow Tail's mentor, Dawn Mist will be Trout Fur's, and Moss Tail will be Willow Stream's. I hope that, very soon, you will become warriors too.
