Chapter description[]
- Leafpool and Crowfeather pad on into unknown moorland hills. Crowfeather stands close next to Leafpool, and warmth floods her. A small voice in her head asks about everything she has left behind. The tabby she-cat attempts to visualize what is happening in ThunderClan. When she thinks about Squirrelflight, a jerk of pain flows through her. For a moment, the pale brown cat thinks about returning home but asks herself how she could now that everyone knew the truth about Crowfeather.
- Crowfeather and his mate find a hollow with a pool at the bottom. Leafpool, who is relieved, springs off and drinks from the pool; the doing so reminding her of the Moonpool. The tiny voice in Leafpool's head recalls the reality that she isn't a medicine cat anymore. Crowfeather appears next to Leafpool and the pool of water, and remarks that there are no fish in the water. His words make the lithe she-cat hungry, and she tells Crowfeather that he can catch them a rabbit in the morning. The dark gray tom efforts to catch some prey along with Leafpool and she catches a mouse. The two cats share the meal, and Leafpool tells Crowfeather that she would be so frightened without him. The medicine cat drifts into sleep, where a dream awaits her.
- Scarlet waves lap at the shore of the lake, and a voice repeats the ominous prophecy that keeps disturbing Leafpool. A snarling fills Leafpool’s ears, and she sees claws, huge shapes, and small eyes. The creature looms over the tabby she-cat and slashes at her eye. She yowls for StarClan, and then her dream fades, revealing the hollow again. Leafpool hears footsteps, and Crowfeather defending the hollow, the noise sounding much like her dream. The she-cat recognizes the creature to be a badger. She is about to start fighting, when Crowfeather reassures her that this is Midnight, the badger who lives in the sun-drown-place. Midnight greets the dark gray tom, who then introduces Leafpool as Squirrelflight’s sister. The old she-badger asks if the two cats fled from their Clans. Before the she-cat can reply, Crowfeather defends them and argues that they had to in order to be together.
- The she-badger tells them that great trouble is coming for the Clans, letting them know that her kin is coming and wants revenge on the Clans for driving them out. Crowfeather asks Midnight whose side she is on, and she responds that she has no side, only peace. The WindClan cat then asks Midnight what she is doing all the way near the lake territories, and Midnight says that she is going to warn the Clans of her kin’s doing, inviting Crowfeather and Leafpool to help her. Before Leafpool can reply, Crowfeather refuses and says that they have left their Clans permanently. Midnight leaves, and Leafpool floats into sleep again. Another horrible dream fills her mind. Gray mist fills her dream, but then a screech of pain yells to StarClan. The dream fades, but not before Leafpool recognizes the voice to be Cinderpelt. The tabby she-cat tells Crowfeather that she cannot abandon her Clan, and he agrees. The two cats begin the trek back to their camps.
