"Squirrelflight watched [Brackenfur] go. Thanks to WindClan they had won the battle. ThunderClan had survived greater disasters than this, and sooner or later the Clan would be as strong as ever. The four scraps of new life in the nursery seemed like a promise from StarClan."

Chapter description[]

Squirrelflight jumps when Crowfeather emerges from the nursery, and he reveals that Cinderpelt is dead. She struggles to believe that it's true, wanting to go in and see for herself, but stays to protect Sorreltail as she kits. While the hollow is emptying, the battle is far from over, and too much blood is being lost. Brackenfur and Firestar duel a badger, and Squirrelflight looks around for Brambleclaw, not noticing him. Ashfur mutters that Crowfeather wouldn't be so upset about the death of their medicine cat, though she knows he isn't grieving just for Cinderpelt. A badger lumbers toward them, and as Ashfur leaps out to fight it, Squirrelflight tells Crowfeather to guard the entrance. Another badger approaches Whitepaw, but Squirrelflight reassures the terrified apprentice that it is Midnight; the latter then greets her. While she is immediately suspicious of the female badger, Midnight reassures her that she has brought allies, and moments later, WindClan cats dart into the camp.
With the reinforcements, the badgers slowly begin to give up the battle and flee the stone hollow. Squirrelflight is relieved to see that Brambleclaw is alive, and she shares his shock that WindClan is helping them after they recently shot down the idea of being friends. As a badger lumbers away, Onestar says that while there are four Clans, they can still help when need be. Ashfur halts beside Squirrelflight, his fur missing in patches, and she notes that she wasn't worried for him that much in the battle. She tells the flecked gray tom to see Leafpool, but he affirms that he is fine, remarking that they were going to be goners before WindClan arrived. Squirrelflight worries about even more dead cats and cats that might die of injuries, and exhausted, ThunderClan warriors hang around Midnight. Whitepaw dashes up to her parents, and Mousefur helps Longtail down from Highledge, with Goldenflower and a few other warriors joining them seconds later.
Dustpelt collapses in relief when he learns his family is okay, and Squirrelflight then formally introduces a wary Firestar to Midnight. Tired, Firestar welcomes the elderly female badger, asking if she knew the attack was going to happen in the first place, to which she responds that she needed to get reinforcements for ThunderClan in WindClan. Midnight adds that the stars foretold her of the battle, and despite her warnings to her kin, they refused to hear her out and insulted her instead. She notes that the badgers hated RiverClan the most, as they drove them out beforehand, and Firestar suggests sending a warning to Leopardstar. However, Midnight disagrees, knowing the badgers will now think twice before attacking the Clans again. Leafpool calls out for Brackenfur, who is barely awake and laying in the clearing; he immediately questions if Sorreltail is alright. Upon hearing that he has four healthy kits, he dashes into the nursery. Squirrelflight notes that ThunderClan will soon be strong again, especially with the new kits, but will grieve the loss of Cinderpelt.
Leafpool happily tells Squirrelflight that she's happy to be back, and Whitetail points out that Crowfeather is in ThunderClan's camp. The latter tells Onestar that he wanted to drop Leafpool off here before he returned to WindClan, and while the WindClan leader wishes to talk with him, he chooses to save it for another time. Firestar begins to tell Onestar how grateful ThunderClan is for WindClan's help, but before he can finish, Thornclaw meows and cuts him off. Squirrelflight glances at the camp entrance, finding two cats making their way forward and leaving her in a state of stunned disbelief. The two cats looking around at the tattered ThunderClan are revealed to be Stormfur and Brook.
