Chapter description[]

Shadowsight and Spiresight are inspecting the young tom's body, noting that his wounds have begun to fester and become infected. The medicine cat murmurs that his Clan believes him to be dead, and that they would soon be right. Shadowsight explains that since he became a spirit, he has been observing the other Clans in hopes of finding his attacker. He notes that ThunderClan had been interesting to visit due to the growing tension. Shadowsight reflects that while it had been helpful to eavesdrop, it was becoming frustrating to be unable to communicate with the living cats.
The two toms continue their investigation, realizing they need to find a cat they can trust. Shadowsight puts forward his former mentor, Puddleshine, but Spiresight disagrees, questioning if the medicine cat could have been Shadowsight's attacker. Shadowsight retorts that Puddleshine could never have done it, but Spiresight remains firm and bluntly tells the young cat that he had been naïve and had not believed any Clan cat would attack him. Shadowsight is hurt as he briefly entertains the thought before reiterating that Puddleshine would not hurt him.
Spiresight backs off and explains to Shadowsight that their main problem is finding a cat that can communicate with them. The black tom explains that a SkyClan cat appears to be able to see him. Shadowsight recognizes him as Rootpaw, and believes him to be trustworthy. The young cat wants to find Rootpaw immediately, but Spiresight tells him he is not going anywhere, as becoming visible to living cats takes time which he might not have. As Shadowsight starts to argue, Spiresight cuts him off, telling him to trust him. With that, the tom disappears, leaving Shadowsight staring at the place where he was. The young tom reflects on his status as a ghost, noting there to be advantages, but thinks he is not ready to be one yet.
