Chapter description[]
- Rootpaw trains with Dewspring, attempting to perfect his sneaking. The young tom comments that battle training is better than learning the difference between herbs. He impresses his mentor, and Dewspring notes that he plans to assess him the following day. The news has Rootpaw in a good mood as the two cats return to SkyClan camp. When he reaches camp, the tom bounds over to his parents, Tree and Violetshine, and announces to them that he is going to become a warrior. Violetshine praises her son, while Tree asks if it is what he truly wants to do. Rootpaw makes his dream clear to the older tom, who praises him with a genuine tone. Needleclaw soon joins them and gives him her congratulations. The yellow tom feels better that night as he tries to sleep, noting that while thoughts of Bramblestar still nag him, his assessment is at the front of his mind.
- The following morning, Rootpaw dreams of his assessment, unaware at first that he is dreaming. However, as he comes to he spots Wrenpaw in the apprentices' den with him and the warm glow of the morning sun. He sees a cat in the aforementioned glow who does not introduce himself at first and only urges the young tom to follow him. Rootpaw is in disbelief at first, his warrior assessment still at the front of his mind, but he follows the cat after he mentions Shadowsight. He follows the ghost into ThunderClan territory, nervous at the thought of being caught. He hopes the ghost is telling the truth about his friend, knowing if he is caught there will be trouble. As the sun continues to rise, Rootpaw asks the ghost if they have further to go, and the tom tells him that they are almost there. Soon, the young cat picks up an awful scent, and the pair stop at a small ravine. There, Rootpaw spots the body of Shadowsight in a terrible state. He figures out that the scent is coming from the medicine cat's body, and as he approaches him is relieved to know that the tabby is still alive. He tells the ghost that he will fetch help, and leaves.
- Returning to SkyClan camp, Rootpaw attempts to fetch Fidgetflake, but is stopped by an annoyed Dewspring. His mentor tells him off for skipping his assessment, as Rootpaw tries to explain his reason for doing so. He manages to state he has found Shadowsight in a serious state in ThunderClan territory and that he needs help. The yellow tom takes Dewspring with him, and as he returns to the small ravine, notices that Shadowsight has grown weaker in a short amount of time. The two SkyClan cats work out a way to carry the tabby's body out, relying on their talents as Clan cats. After getting the ShadowClan cat out of the ravine, they take him straight to SkyClan camp for treatment. Upon returning, they are met by many members of the Clan gathering to find out what happened. Violetshine appears and comforts her son at the sight of blood, but he tells her it is not his. Rootpaw offers to go to ShadowClan to tell Tigerstar and Dovewing that their son had been found. Leafstar appears shortly after, demanding to know what is going on. Rootpaw quickly explains what happened, stating that some cat had tried to kill Shadowsight. He challenges Leafstar's decision not to risk a fight with Bramblestar. Without his leader's permission, he leaves with his mother to visit ShadowClan's camp.
