Chapter description

Shadowsight stands watching his mother grieve over his body in SkyClan's medicine cat den. Hardly being able to bear to see Dovewing's grief and anxiety, he inwardly tells her that he will be back soon as he sees his father pacing in front of the den, claiming Bramblestar was his attacker. Fidgetflake tells the ShadowClan leader that they have no proof, causing the tabby to fix the tom a glare and stating that he knows that a cat attacked his son. Dovewing reminds her mate of the time, moons prior, that they had suspected another Clan of poisoning their fresh-kill, but, it had instead been Juniperclaw. She mentions that they cannot start accusing cats without solid proof. However, Tigerstar remains adamant that Bramblestar had attacked Shadowsight and states that if the proof does arise and if his kin is hurt, he would deal with Bramblestar himself. Hearing this discussion, Shadowsight decides to use his newfound abilities as a ghost to eavesdrop on ThunderClan.

Arriving in ThunderClan camp, the tom is met with cats doing their daily routines. He notes that everything is quite peaceful until he sees Bramblestar block Stormcloud from the fresh-kill pile. Bramblestar banishes the tabby from the camp for the night for not upholding the warrior code. The leader snaps at an apprentice, ordering her to pick the ticks off of the elders. Shadowsight follows Bramblestar back to his den only to realize that the tabby can see him when he begins talking to him directly. The tabby leader confesses to the medicine cat that he was his attacker, stating that his ability to see him could be linked to those that he has killed or that spirits can recognize other spirits. Shadowsight watches in fear and disbelief as the impostor shifts his spirit from Bramblestar's body. The gray tabby is unable to make out the color of the tom's pelt but notes his dark blue eyes and that he is not sure who he is.

Shadowsight asks what has happened to the real Bramblestar. The impostor reveals that he had taken advantage of an opportunity and that he had seen and spoken to the real Bramblestar since invading his body. The spirit laughs when Shadowsight asks what has happened to the real Bramblestar, telling the tom that he should not ask unless he wants the same fate. He calls the young medicine cat unfaithful for not successfully passing on the codebreaker vision. Shadowsight is shocked to learn that the voice who had told him the prophecy and led him to take Bramblestar to the hill to heal, had belonged to the mysterious tom. He learns that he had become the cat's accomplice without knowing it.

Turning back to the spirit, Shadowsight once again demands to learn where Bramblestar's spirit and if it had been destroyed. The impostor laughs, but, does not respond as Shadowsight feels the tug of his body back to SkyClan. As he collects his thoughts, Spiresight tells him he was cutting it close and asks where he had been. Shadowsight realizes that he is not sure how to answer the tom's question.
