Below contains in-depth information for chapter fourteen of Veil of Shadows. If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
Rootpaw stares at the SkyClancats around him. He sees his parents, Violetshine and Tree, and his sister Needleclaw, along with Dovewing and Tigerstar. The ShadowClanleader and his mate are visiting Shadowsight, who is in the medicine catden with Frecklewish. As Leafstar prepares to make Rootpaw a warrior, Rootpaw tells Needleclaw that it feels weird, as he did not have a warrior assessment. Needleclaw tells him that he did better than that, and hushes him. Leafstar explains how Rootpaw saved Shadowsight, how he created a bond between SkyClan and ShadowClan, and praises his bravery and wisdom. She says that she does not think he needs a warrior ceremony, and no cat objects, except for Dewspring asking her to get on with the ceremony. She performs the ceremony, giving Rootpaw the name of Rootspring.
Rootspring reflects back on how he feared that his ability to see ghosts would interfere with his training, and how he was embarrassed by his difference, but it helped him save Shadowsight. He accepts that he can see spirits, and he wants to believe that what Leafstar told him was true, and feel strong, but instead feels shaken by the episode with Shadowsight. He did not tell anyone about the ghost that took him to Shadowsight, and how he had seen him many times. He sees the ghost still hanging around Shadowsight, and asks himself if the ghost is there to wait for him to die, but shakes his head and reassures himself that Shadowsight has to survive.
Needleclaw tells him that he deserves a good piece of prey, and that they can find one together. Rootspring says he will come back later, as there is something he wants to do, and walks into the medicine den with Tree and Leafstar. Inside, Fidgetflake is sorting herbs for Shadowsight, and Dovewing is licking her son, asking him to wake up. She greets Rootspring by his apprentice name when he walks in. When the SkyClan leader corrects her, she apologizes and congratulates Rootspring. When Tigerstar asks about Shadowsight, Fidgetflake replies that his wounds are clean and his health is improving, but he can not tell when Shadowsight will wake, and they will have to be patient. Rootspring understands their fear, but is grateful that he does not need to explain how he found Shadowsight, which he thinks would make him sound foolish.
Shadowsight's ears twitch, he opens his eyes, asking if he is really back. Rootspring is confused, replying that Shadowsight had been there the whole time, ever since he found him. Shadowsight goes on, saying that he was not there, but gets cut off by Dovewing, who asks Fidgetflake if he is feverish, and says that he is not making any sense. When Fidgetflake tries to check Shadowsight, Shadowsight pushes away his paw and begs everyone to listen. He tells them that he had not been in his body and had gone to ThunderClan to speak with Bramblestar, finding out that the ThunderClan leader was the one who attacked him. He begs Rootspring to try to contact Bramblestar's spirit, and everyone stares at him, causing him to feel nervous. Rootspring says they have tried everything to find him, but nothing had worked, and if Bramblestar is around, he is not responding to him. Shadowsight asks him to try one more time, and Rootspring, touched by Shadowsight's faith in him, agrees. When Rootspring tries, he sees something flicker, but it quickly disappears.
Tree reassures his son that he also felt something, and he urges Leafstar to believe Shadowsight and Rootspring. The leader is unsure, and questions if Shadowsight simply had a strange dream. She does not want to depose Bramblestar until she is entirely sure of the evidence. She promises to speak with ThunderClan warriors at the meeting of the rebels that night, and Tigerstar warns that he will be preparing his warriors for battle if it comes to that. Fidgetflake gives Shadowsight more herbs and ushers the others out of the medicine den to let the wounded cat rest. As Rootspring leaves the den, he is surrounded by Turtlecrawl, Kitescratch, Gravelnose, and Pigeonfoot, who express excitement about Shadowsight's vision and declare their intent to go to ThunderClan and gather proof about Bramblestar. Rootspring discourages them, and reminds them that he needs to sit vigil. He feels a strong sense of loyalty to his Clan and leader, and trusts that Leafstar will make the right decision about Bramblestar.
I, Leafstar, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn. Rootpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life?
Rootpaw:
I do.
Leafstar:
Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Rootpaw, from this moment on, you shall be known as Rootspring. StarClan honors your strength and resilience, and we welcome you as a full warrior of SkyClan.
